Hi can any one help.

I had a gastric band privately a few years ago I think it's safe to say its a failure as my bmi is now 50!! Around six months ago I attempted a band fill but it's turns out the port had flipped and I had to go to a&e at Salford Royal for a full aspiration under X-ray.

In jan I went to my gp as I am really fed up, bmi of 50, band that doesn't work and £5000 lighter since my original op. I asked my gp if they would consider the revision surgery on the nhs or even better a gastric bypass (which I should have got in the first place but decided not to due to the price). My gp agreed that due to my situation she would try to skip the weight management part and wrote a letter the the ccg to ask for funding.

In march I spoke to the ccg who still had not received the letter- I asked my gp to send the letter again and they have now finally got it. I spoke to the ccg today who say that they have spoken to nhs England and say that due to meeting criteria my gp can refer me straight to the surgon. I have two questions

1. Does this mean that I have been approved for funding and what is the process from here?

2. They also said that I can choose is I would like to go to derby or chesterfield hospital. Does anyone have any experience of either of these hospitals to inform my decision.

Sorry long winded I'm new to all this so feel a little lost! Thanks xx

I'm sorry I don't know much about the process at this hospital but at Sunderland BMI over 50 is automatically given surgery basically your not set a weight loss target but it still has to go to a board for funding. I've had my meeting and told i can have it but need to lose 5 kg in 3 month then I'll be put on the waiting list. Good luck in your journey

I had my RNY at Derby in sept 2012. All of the bariatric team and the staff on the ward are fabulous. In Derby, the surgeon applies for funding when he places you on the waiting list.

They like you to lose some weight at each appointment (usually 3 appointments) if you can lose weight and demonstrate your commitment to the lifestyle change, you'll go on the list. I'm not sure what the waiting list times are at the moment though. Hope this helps you a little :)

Derby surgeons Mr Leeder and Mr Ahmed seem to be real specialists. I'm in the Midlands and I chose Derby of all the places I could have gone. I'm going for bypass with Mr Ahmed on 10 April.

AS Paula says, the Derby team are wonderful. They really do care about their patients and want what's best for them.

The wonderful Mr Ahmed is quite strict on people following his/the teams instructions (and in view of the amount of people wanting surgery/length of lists etc, he has every right to be), but as Paula says it is mostly regarding losing weight between appointments. They are not asking for huge amounts (some areas want a specific amount lost while Derby just want to see enough of a commitment that you haven't put on. They really do understand how stressful the whole process is.

Good luck with everything xx
