I go for my surgery August 6,2013. I have done so much research asked so many questions and have been mentally preparing myself for this huge lifestyle change. I have plenty of loved ones to support me and for that I am truly Blessed!! Wanted to know if anyone else is going in for RNY soon or have already gone through it would really like to hear some of your stories especially of the discomfort from the after care fresh out of the op.. Thanks

Hiya,

Just been looking at the other thread about your pre-op slip - sorry you got a bit of an ear bashing!..

I'm 5 days post op (bypass) so wanted to wish you well. I did the low cal/low fat pre-op and found it easy to stick to but am now thinking I should have done liquid as am finding it hard to do the soup/yoghurt one- longing to actually bite something! I'm sure most people have a little wobble at some point.

Best of luck for 6th August

Yes, and average weight loss is only around 60% of excess weight. OP got an ear bashing because frankly she deserved it. An ear bashing is much easier for her to deal with than the other possible consequences of cheating on her preop.

Thanks for the well wishes.. My Dr and Nutritionist strictly said just liquids the means only water, sugar free juice,Popsicles, pudding or jello sugar free of course and we can't forget the protein shakes.. I am able to eat salad and vegetables of course only certain ones.. It's not easy and I know everyone's diets are different.. I have never been to fond of the Splenda or anything that remotely tasted sugarfree!! I think what broke my heart the most when I did my consultation with my surgeon was the fact that I won't be able to eat sweets again I have always gbeen a sweets lover.. Candy, cookies, cakes.. You name it I loved it so that was when it really hit me this is a life change from all those bad habits that I've learned throughout my life that are now affecting my kids.. So I'm not only doing this for my health but also so my kids won't struggle with their weight either.. They are already overweight which breaks my heart so once they see me losing weight and eating healthier I hope they get some inspiration and decide to join me..

I deliberately didn't post it in there to avoid this sort of response - I personally don't feel it's helpful, and if I were to share what my dietician told me you wouldn't like that so I haven't - I'm just trying to be positive. Surely it's important to be in a positive frame of mind in the lead up to surgery?

Exactly it's sad how people want to be so negative my mother lectures me enough lol don't need anymore lectures just some advice from those that have struggled and succeeded in the WL

Good luck with your op. Hope everything goes well. I didn't have to much pain actually when I came out of surgery, except for at the very beginning. Three days after I came home I could sleep without painkillers, my wounds healed quickly and I could do most of my activities again within a week or two, except for heavy exercising which you have to be more careful with at the beginning. But our bodies are all different, and so is our pain threshold, so what happened for Me may not be what will happen for you and vice versa. Hope the pain will not be too bad for you, and again, good luck. X

The reality is, that in the most part, you can still eat these things - in moderation. I eat a small bar of chocolate maybe once a week, and really enjoy it when I do!

But when you know that your nutritional needs have changed, and you have to eat good quality food to make sure you stay healthy, making good food choices becomes a priority.

From your language I'm guessing you are from the other side on the pond? So your advise may be quite different, as the majority on here on UK based.

Oh ok guess I'm on the wrong side of the pond lol but I do enjoy reading all this information and learning new things everyday I know it's a lifestyle change and just a small step towards achieving a normal weight dream.. I know it's going to take determination and alot of hard work to get where I want to be..

Good luck :)

I worked for 2 years on the 'other side' and compared with this side you are in for a much harder time. We have way too much temptation in the UK, but in the States it is so much harder. I was in NYC for most of the time, but spent 9 weeks in DFW, that was the most calorific experience of my life as we worked 20 hour days and just ate and slept.

You may find that you will be able to eat candy afterwards, and will push yourself to the limit testing.

If your kids are overweight as well, you need to have an entire family tough love. Every form of processed food, chips, candy, sodas get them out of the house NOW. Junk food is to be banned family wide.

Get the entire house on home cooked portion controlled food ready for your changes. Make time for planning healthier meals. If you can't cook, learn, there are enough recipes on the www.

Make time for living :D

And just a small lecture from an old timer... follow the rules ;), they are not there to be broken. We do know what we are talking about. I have gone from a US 16 (UK 20) to a US 2/4 (UK 6/8) in 13 months. Being thin is FAB !!

Wow That's fabulous that you've dropped down to a size 2/4 it must feel wonderful!!! Thanks for all the advice I have already told my kids that they will also be eating healthier because I would like them to live long lives. They didn't like the idea and sugar free and no junk kinda scares them. But if I don't buy it then they'll just eat whatever I do buy so they'll get use to new snacks and new foods. Which in the long run will benefit there future. Thanks again and I look forward to hearing from you again.

Can't agree more with thinnerjemmima in getting the family involved with healthier eating. My dietician encouraged me to do this too as I was quite clearly "a feeder" . We deliberately bought a smaller set of plates ...not quite as small as my side plate though but not that much bigger. Hubby as a result has lost over a stone and has a healthy BMI now. The only one to complain is my stick thin son so he still gets his big plate when he visits.. sigh. My other two children have welcomed it. Snacks in our stock cupboards are kept to the barest of minimum now which not only keeps temptation down to a minimum for me but helps hubby to pace himself a bit better.
Good luck hun... Not too long to go now so keep up the good work ;)

Thanks Fem these kids act like if there are no snacks, chips, cakes there is nothing to eat that's my own fault for always buying junk smh !! I guess you live and you learn that's what life's all about I just hope there on board with this lifestyle change and accept that eating habits will change. I want them to be more physical to since they are always glued to there phones or computers..

Fruit, carrot sticks, cucumber.....

And always sit a the table to eat. Breaks the habit of hand in mouth with rubbish rather than a conscious eating.
