We don't get anything as a matter of course, just been told to take multivits and get blood tests every few months. I'm not very happy with the way thing's seem to differ from area to area and srgeon to surgeon, it's not very encorouging don't think to be honest. You would think that by now there would be a set formula?

Hi FEDUP
I`v been on the jabs for the past few years because I`m type 2 diabetic and I was getting numbness in my hands and legs and feeling very tired . I was sent to the diabetic clinic at the hospital and I told him , I got blood tests and it came back I was vitamin b12 deficiency. I started getting the jabs once a week for a month then every 12 weeks for life . Good luck and take care .

I understand that it varies from person to person as regards needs, but it just seems a bit slap dash to be honest how thing's are so different at different hospital's. I'm not very impressed with my hospital it has to be said, but I'm still gratefull to have had the oppertunity to to have the op so I don't want to complain to much but thing's could be much better in my humble opinion.

that they could i think they should all get togeather and make 1 plan for everyone so everyone gets what they need to stay fit and healthy i have no complaints about my hospital they look after me great im sorry your havin proplems.if i can be off any help please ask x x sarah

Well the procedure for my hospital is test every few months and you get them if you need them. I'm not one to rant and rave and keep pestering, I'm a quiet sort really so I just try and go with the flow but after being on this site for some time now I realise how rubbish our service is compared to some other's.
I was the gunea pig for my hospital and there still learning, I know thing's havent improved that much in 9 month's as I know recent bypasser's from same hospital and they get pretty much the same treatment as I got, not total rubbish but very poor.

Your surgeon should send a referral back to your GP, once your outside of your surgeons care your looked after long term by your GP, and in that referral the surgeon sends it should detail what it is your GP needs to do and provide, i was sent a copy of the referral letter by my surgeon, so i know exactly what he's told my GP, post i op i went in to see my GP and we discussed amongst other things my vitamin requirements. I now get all my vitamins on prescription via my GP in two monthly batches, and i go into the clinic at the GP's every 3 months for my B12 jab ! (infact i have my next one Friday) and i'm now on yearly blood tests also carried out at the practice clinic.

Post op bypass patience need to get this all sorted, vitamin and particularly B12 deficiency is a serious business you really cant afford to get wrong

i went private, i have 3 monthly bloods taken for 2 yrs, then 6 monthly for 3 yrs then yearly for the rest of my life...its all included in the aftercare. but as the hosp is an hour away, my gp has made an agreement and he does my blood tests and my surgery provider pays for them...all working well for me.

My GP has ahd nothing to do with this op other than they know I've had it. I'm still under the "fat clinic" at my loca hospital who refered me for the op, they have been less than satisfactory, and I'm now 9 months post op and still havent spoken to a dieticn to this day.
I only know what I know through sites like this and internet research.

i cant believe how much everyones experiences differ...especially post op. even though i self funded asi could not bear to wait years and jump through hoops for surgery my gp has been absolutly fantastic and supportive...even as far as saying he will refere me for an nhs tummy tuck when the time comes. my surgery group (southwest bariatric) has also been fab, i have life time aftercare which includes access to a dietitian either in person, internet or phone when ever i need her input or advice...and believe me in the first couple of months i spoke to her weekly! the co ordinator also emails regularly to see how i am doing. touch wood...everything has been 100% what i was told by them and i would reccommend them to anyone in theis area.

I haven't been given them at all - just told to take multivitamins.

I'm having my post-op review at my hospital next Tuesday and I will ask then.

Paul are you referring to Russell's Hall or Walsall Manor?

I havent had to have b12 or iron tabs I have one lot of blood tests since my op in Jan and was told my bloods were fine I dont no if I will get blood tests at my next appointment which is june 19th. Will have to ask

Hi there, not had my surgery yet but already have to take b12 shots 3 monthly for life as my body does not absorb b12 normally through my digestive system. I also have to take 5mg of folic acid a day as part of the b12 regime.

In which context? I was the guinea pig at Russells hall, Walsall Manor have been a waste of time, in fact the last time I went the doc was so rude and obnoxious that I havent been since. After 6 day's without having ANY food intake at all his only concern was that I was taking my multivit's and sugar free liquids.Walsall's dieticn has never contacted me, I have had Zero dietry advice, my files have been "missplaced" twice so nobody knew anything. When I had the op, Russells hall had trouble getting my files back from Walsall and consiquently I saw no one for the first 2 months post op.
Russells hall admitted that they could do better and that "errors" had been made.
