Afternoon folks

Well just over a week till my bypass, scared and excited at the same time. My ten year wedding anniversary tomorrow and going away for the night, no kids,no dog absolute bliss.....:p am on 2nd week of my pre op diet, which is a pain, but will just have fish and veg, will a glass of champagne muck the whole thing up ?
Quick question, after the bypass how many times do you get the B12 injection and is it done on the nhs and does it really help ?

Many Thanks Folks

Hi Perissa,

With the bypass, we obviously get malabsorption which means we do not absorb all the vitamins and minerals from our food etc. This is why you will have regular(ish!) blood tests after the surgery. B12 is a common one we get low on, and many people have a monthly or quarterly B12 shot to keep them ticking along nicely!! Being low on B12 can cause certain anemias, which if left untreated can cause permanent damage to the nervous system! B12 can be taken in pill/liquid form too, but I think the shot is of a higher concentration. Several shots may also be needed to get the correct levels, with "maintenance" shots required after.

I personally did not have a shot in hospital, and will have to wait until my blood test due shortly to find out my B12 levels, along with everything else!

Take care,

Kel xx

This is just with the bypass, the band dose not affect malabsoption, though the band fill needles are a lot bigger and hurt a lot more, especially if they have problems finding the port :D

I have never had the injections and no one has mentioned them too me. should i be having them????

I think it would be worth getting your GP to check your levels Tammy, particularly with the hairloss problems etc.

Hi, I don't get my B12 until my 6 month check up - I think I get a batch to take home with me that I will have to take in to the GP.

Hi, I spoke to my gp and as far as he is aware, I don't have any B12 injections, all the girls that have had it with same consultant as me haven't had them either! so think needs checking!!!!

Do you have to have blood tests every three months for the rest of my life, my gp is under impression I only need them once

i had my first B12 3 months post op and then every 3 months, my bloods i have done annually.
