Hi everyone has anyone had anything done with The Bariatric Group? if so how were they and did you have a positive experience with them.
Thanks xx

I am having my gastric bypass with the barriatric group 31st October, the dealings I've has so far have been positive, the surgeon mr Marcus reddy was so good, spent an hour with me going into great detail about the different options, I'll let you knoost op if I'm still pleased with my choice lol

I had my surgery through the Bariatric Group (and was sleeved via Marcus Reddy). I found them to be very efficient pre surgery, everything went to plan, responsive to emails and phone calls etc.

HOWEVER: absolute silence since the op! One letter to confirm my 6 week post surgical follow up meeting with MR and that's been it. No call from the dietician as promised, no other contact or checking in calls, no support. Luckily, I am feeling very well and don't need the support, but that's perhaps not the point.

So just worth validating with them - are they just channels to the surgeon (as I feel they were for me) or will they support you through the process afterwards as well as before?

HTH and good luck - Jx

Thank you for you reply Jozefina It's good to get some feed back about after care (or lack of it ) I will def be asking what their after care is xx

Well would just like to say most places private or Nhs don't have great aftercare, appointments too far apart or canc elled, some like yours baove have little or no contact afterwards, a lady I know went private and she said aftercare what aftercare, ther wasn't any. Some hopsitals have been known to be poor also it can be a lottery really. Thankfully I have been really well and need little after care had 2 app since op and the 2nd was to dischatge me 2 years later NHS that was. xx

Hi chrisa thanks for your input Seems like most of them (private or nhs ) don't really want much to do with you once you have had your surgery I will have to look into this more x

Marcus Reddy has his own website and arrangement for dealing with him directly if he's who you know you want. From memory, his prices are similar and I think there was more offered than TBG provided.

I have a very similar story, went private with the Bariatric Group, Mr Finlay was my surgeon, who also is the NHS surgeon in Cornwall. He was lovely if a little distant pre-op.

My surgery went well after the hospital delayed it for three hours, so was very dehydrated initially, he was furious.

However that was it really. 1 phone call 2 days after discharge from a nurse. A post op appointment 6 weeks later with Mr Finlay then nothing at all, until I had a letter asking me if I would prefer to forgo my year out appointment and again the same letter this month ( now 2years post)

Fortunately I have had a brilliant experience with my new tummy and had no problems, except 1 awful dumping episode and 1 minor one!!! Have been very careful not to do that again.

I feel that they had my money and that was it really, but from what I gather this isn't uncommon whether you go private or NHS.

Hi Sarah I am also in Cornwall so would have Mr Finlay as the surgeon it's nice to see someone local on here and to hear your experience of the bariatric group thanks for your comments x

I have had my paperwork from the hospital saying they want me to take a credit or debit card for extras! Did anyone have any surprise bills to pay, the fee I'm paying the barriatric group is wiping our savings out, I can't afford extras!

Don't worry - this is a standard thing from private hospitals. I had it too and wasn't charged anything. I left with an extra pair of the oh-so-shexy compression stockings, some painkillers and another medication but there was no (additional) charge. I think the card is to cover the use of the phone, meals (!) and other hospital extras, not the medical stuff.

Which hospital are you using? I went to the London Independent in Stepney so can answer any questions about that if I can if it's the same one.

Yes I'm going to the London independent too with Marcus Reddy, so any info would be great

Well, the good news is that it's a nice place, with (I thought) very efficient and kind staff. I felt as if I had very good service (other than being offered meals every two minutes!) and was very well cared for. The rooms are very comfortable, with a fridge, TV with Freeview, shower room and free wi-fi. I had a nice room at the front of the building overlooking the square.

Marcus and his team are just great, can't say enough good things about the whole process of dealing with him and everyone else. I got an email from him the other day asking how I was doing.

One thing that is worth checking (with Marcus) is what time you have to be there on the day of your procedure. My standard, template admission letter from the LIH said "please be admitted at 7am" which would have meant going over the night before, but Marcus said to ignore that and get there for noon, as he wouldn't be operating before 2.30pm (and in the end it was 4.30pm due to his previous surgery over running). The rooms are quite hot and I was glad I had my mouth spray and an Evian water mister to keep cool whilst on nil by mouth, sitting around waiting.

If you go over to the Sleevers section of the site, I started a thread there for people sleeved in June 2013 which has a few posts which may also be helpful :)

HTH and good luck!!

Jx

Thank you I feel a bit easier now, my letter says to arrive at 12, but the bariatric nurse said on the phone I may have to go earlier to have a group and save blood test done, I'm having the bypass but will look at the page you suggested, thank you, I'm off on holiday for 2 weeks now for a last binge eat and drink lol, and when I get back I start the pre op diet, my last fat holiday I hope xx
