By Pass verses Sleeve

loubyl00

I want to shrink!
Are the results similar with a Sleeve rather than a by pass?

My surgeon told me today that if he cant do the by pass becasue of my adhesions he will do a sleeve.

Didnt even think baout the Sleeve so dont know much about it!

Hi Lou, I know a couple of people with a sleeve and their weight loss doesn't seem any different from mine with a bypass. I think the results out so far say the % lost at 3 years are equal for both ops. Congratulations on being offered the sleeve. I am sure you will be very happy. xx

The thing I was told to remember is that, as the sleeve is a relatively new procedure compared to bypass, there isn't yet the long term results to compare the two procedures.

Apparently the short term results (1-3 years) are about the same, 50-60% excess weight loss. There are fewer issues with malabsorption and recovery of nutrients from food consumed so less need for supplements.

As the 'plumbing' isn't rearranged you will eventually be able to eat all foods albeit in smaller quantities than before; there aren't the problems associated with dumping syndrome and, it won't cure reflux unless you also have hernia repair done simultaneously.

The rates for resolution if type 2 diabetes is slower than with bypass but it does appear that it happens over time from the data they have gathered so far.

Hope all that helps,

Tatiana
