Gastric band diet

The only things I do not eat now are bread and beef.

I can eat mince but red meat is generally a bit tough to digest.

I still have rice on very odd occassion but can manage no more than a dessert spoon full and I hvae not had pasta in months. I tend to go for a little cous cous now and then.

Basically it's not so much restrictive as just much small quantity.

For example on Mother's Day I went to my parents, had a pre dinner wine and they had cooked roast dinner and while they had mountainous plates of spuds and meat my plate looked like this...

2 slices of lam about the length and size of two fingers together but only half as thick.
2 halfs of a roast potato
Half a Yorkshire pudding
Tablespoon of sliced carrots and cabbage
Half a Roast Parsnip
Little Gravy

I was last to finish - which always makes me giggle as I was always the first.

Then half an hour after I finished that I managed a tiny wedge of toffee cheesecake as a treat.

So life can be totally normal...just in miniature ;):)

my fill restriction level is now perfect for me, i cant bread of any type, no rice, no pasta, most meats are diffiucult for me apart from a little chicken or rice.
yesterday i ate..

breakfast 1 baby bowl of cornflakes with skimmed milk

lunch 1 tennis ball sized jacked potatoe with 1 ladle of chilli and a light sprinkle of grated cheese, i managed to eat half of the meal.

tea time 1 tin of hienz pea and ham soup

snacks 1 small bag of salted peanuts

drinks 3 coffees & lots of water as water intake is important.

i can drink alcohol just like before but you have to be aware of the hidden high calory content in booze.

Thanks for your responses. Sorry for all the questions but I am researching the band at the moment and I guess the best way of finding out the truth is asking the people who have had it done!

How do you find eating out? I think I would begrudge paying for a meal that I will probably only eat a quarter of! lol

Has there been anything about your surgery that has surprised you or disappointed you?

eating out for me is ok if i plan ahead, i see the menu before i go then im not fretting about what to choose, i always choose safe band foods that i know wont make me vomit, i usually choose what ever option has mash on the meal, then at least i can eat the mash and veg, and i can also order extra gravy if its needed, or another option is to order a starter when the others are having there main course, its about making the right food choices for the band when out, i have on occasions had to leave the table to be sick, but i have now learned to make safe band food choices when eating out.
I havent had any surpises or dissapointments, as its just a new learning curve in life, and you learn as you go along your weight loss journey.

LBD, if you are serious about this, a meal out will not hamper your decision, you can always ask for a smaller portion or go for a starter instead...

I now focus on the social aspect of eating out, not the food ;):)

Sorry I didn't mean to sound flippant.

A lot of our social life involves eating out and I wanted to know how much this would be affected.

LBD eating out will be fine once you have come to terms with life with a band, you will soon learn what foods you can and cant tollerate and incorperate them choices with eating in public, and learn to make them food choices accordingly with the life style you lead. you will be ok.

Sorry if I came across wrong, what I meant is, don't let it be a deciding factor in your decision. There are too many positive and good reasons to get the surgery....and if it puts your mind at ease, I eat out reasonably frequently...so it only affects you if you let it...:):):)

i think from reading the others replys i can eat a little more than them but for me my restriction is perfect
on mothers day i had

4cream cheese crackers for brekfast

3 sprouts half a parsnip, 4 small roast potatoes, a dessert spoon of cabbage, and about 4 slices of pork razor thin finger length

strawbeery crumble and custard an hour later

bowl of salad that night

i cant eat chicken, most fish, rice, pasta, bread, sausages nuggets[processed meat] sausage rolls or any pastry alot of different fruits not to good with

for me its just about adjusting to not being able to have those foods but if going out for a meal i just have a salad

It's interesting to see how different people tolerate different things. I guess it's trial and error to see what works for each individual. Carbs seem to be an issue with most people.

Do you still get the cravings for things you just can't manage? If so, how do you cope with that?

I haven't found any negative aspects about the band yet which is reassuring. My research goes on........... lol

Thanks for your replies.

i crave a big juicy salad sandwich i get over this by occasionally having a mouthful of one then spitting it out lol

i crave a nice crispy bacon sandwich with lashings of brown sauce, i dare not tho as i know i will be sick lol.

Hmmmm what do I crave these days?

I guess what I miss sometime is a big juicy burger in a bun, with all the trimmings.

To get over this I have the burger, with a bit of melted cheese and some gherkins and a mouthful of oven chips. Not the same as a Maccy D's but hey ho...I knew there would be trade offs.

And sometimes I wish I could manage cake but can't know at all.

ALCOHOL

I to would liketo hear about the quantity and effects of alcohol. I am due to have my band next month.

alcohol does not effect the band, i still have a blow out on booze most weekends but i do have to take in to consideration the high calories, as if you drink to often it can stop the weight loss, also beer or any other gassy drink should be avoided, i drank for my 1st 12 months when i fancied a tipple was white wine, i now have vodka and still orange i can tollerate diet coke in that but its recomended not to.

Hi Lisa, just wanted to let you know that I have just learned a lot from this thread and these fab banded peeps.I'm pre op and I know I won't be able to get through it without asking advice from my lovely mini buddy's.You keep on asking and it will help others understand too.
