Group Session

So this morning I had my group session at Northern General in Sheffield.
There were about 25 of us and a lady who was 1 year post op.
The clinical nurse specialist and the specialist dietician were both lovely and gave us loads of info, they talked us through the 3 procedures available at NGH and the benefits/downsides of each one, as well as plenty of advice about diet changes after surgery.
The lady who was 1 year post op, looked amazing, she had lost over 9 stone and was all smiley and glowing with health, she was honest too, she said we might get excess loose skin but it was easy to hide :D
At the end we had a chance to say if we wanted the operation or if we needed more time to think ( you have 12 weeks to think about it) or if it isn't for you.
I said 'yes' immediately so now I'm waiting for an appointment with the consultant!
The nurse said the whole process should take about 5-6 months from start to finish, so I'm hoping I'll be the new me by Christmas!

wow, i got referred a week after you and am still waiting for a funding decision. im really pleased for you, which surgery did you opt for. i have done a lot of research and because of my diabetes im going to ask for a bypass but i find it really interesting to see what everyone else decides. im so pleased that its going so well for you xxx

I'm going to ask for a bypass too, it suits my eating habits (large portion size and snacker) and I have type 2 diabetes.
Funding hasn't even been mentioned, I think in my region we are one of the very few lucky places where funding applications are not an issue.
Em xxxx

Well done you!

That's super quick too compared to us at Sunderland.

I'm pretty sure at the NGH once you have gone as far as the group session and then meeting the consultant that is it , they don't hang around lol

Think SRH has lot of patients who come from far and wide, i am 1 of them and took me nearly 2 years from start to finish. LOng haul but worth it in the end. good for you xxTHE bypass is a good choice. xx

Just a quick update, I got home from my retina screening appointment today to find a letter from NGH, I've got my appointment to see Mr Ackroyd (surgeon) next Wednesday!
I couldn't read the letter myself as my vision was so blurred after my eye drops at the hospital, so I had to get my partner to read it out to me and of course to tease me he read it as slowly as possible!

Excellent news - quicker than me too :-(
