Hi there, wasnt sure where to put this as i have been here before but I wanted to say hi again now i have a clear idea of how my weightless journey is going. I have tried many diets all of which have failed so I was considering the possibility of surgery. I was not sure i fit the criteria and was worried about being laughed at so have only just managed to get myself down to the doctors. I think it went ok. He initially was going to refer me for an assessment for surgery but then decided to try me with orlistat for 3 months first. I had already tried the oots version that didnt work but the doc wanted me to try these being supervised. Hopefully i lose some weight on these. Have to say i was disappointed that he changed his mind!

Hi Ellie, surgery isn't for everyone and it isn't the magic pill a lot of people think it is. I went private because I wasn't big enough for the NHS to consider me. I had a lot of counselling, dietician meets and appointments with the surgeon before they agreed to me having it.
I think your doc is going about it the right way, too many just resort to the surgery option when it may not suit the patient. I hope you get on ok with the Orlistat and in 3 months time, if you still feel you want to go down the surgery route then go back and see him.At least he will know you have tried and you are commited to losing weight. Take care xx

I totally agree, especially for those that are on the smaller side of what the nhs might consider. I also went privately as my trust wouldn't consider me unless I put in weight and that was out if the question for my circumstances, although there are some that do.
I am now 6 months out and although I am buying size 12's and have lost over 6 stone, if I had not been physically disabled and not able to, I wish I had tried a bit harder to do thi Fa without surgery. It is only now hitting me that this is for life, no going back and that is real enforced change.

I agree, too. I had to try the tablets first, too. I think the reason they are definitely considering me for surgery is because I have type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and sleep apnea. But I agree, weight loss surgery is a drastic step and if you manage to lose weight without it, that's certainly a bonus. They will want to know that you tried everything else before they refer you for surgery. Good luck with whatever happens. Ines x

weight management will probably be part of the criteria anyway. Good luck, and never stray far from a loo lol :) xxx

Hi Ellie,
It seems that both you and your dr are going about this in a very responsible way.
As other people have mentioned, surgery is not for everyone. Even if surgery is a route you would consider after your weight managment/loss (orlistat), you need to do all the research .... so you have come to the right place. In my experience, the users of this forum are pre & post oppers with lots of great advice, and they will give you honest (good and bad) details of their experiences.

Good luck with your weight-loss journey!

SNx

your luky i had to be on orlistat for 2years. thats y i got referred for surgery, because the tablets can only do so much. my eating habits have changed so much (no fat diet) that the tablets stopped working... and the company had some crisis and stopped making them for the last year!

Part of the criteria for NHS funding is that you have had a weight management programme of at least 6 months before you will be put forward for funding. I tried Orlistat some years ago, in conjunction with WeightWatchers and lost over 4 stone. I then gave up smoking a couple of years later and put the weight back on over a few years so have now had Weight loss surgery. But if anything else that I tried had worked in the long term (and I tried dieting and exercise several times) then my choice would not have been to have surgery. My health issues meant that I needed it.

It's a long hard road on them orlistat things :-( I couldn't take to them so did a wmc for 6 months now I've lost weight I've got appointments booked proper happy bunny good luck :)

Hello - I am just wondering are you saying you regret having surgery now and wish you'd done it the traditional way? How long were you overweight for before opting for surgery? :)

hope you find something that helps you
