is it ever that quick???

Hi Helen

I am undergoing all the groups for Truro hospital at the moment. I think it is highy unlikely that you would get the op in 6 months. I was initially seen by Dugal (who is female) around March time. She said she was going to fast track me due to me having had ovarian cancer a few years ago and a very strong family history for breast cancer. Apparently these illnesses are caused by oestrogen which is made more when you are fat! Dr Dugal said it will still be at least 8 months before I will have the surgery.

With regard to your thoughts about going private, I was set to go private but my husband and friend both felt that I should do it with the NHS. I really wanted to have it straight away. Anyway, I am doing it with the NHS and am really glad I am. I have been attending a healthy eating course and been to the dietician groups as well. I am so grateful to my friend and husband for talking me into it as I feel I am getting ready for life after the surgery. I am getting to grips with healthy eating and am losing weight already. You will see people who have gone private and are struggling because they haven't done anything to prepare for life after the surgery.

Makes sense what you are saying. I'm private, having my op Saturday. Today is the first time I will meet with the nutritionist, or anyone really! I've been asking my friend all about it and researching instead.

I had my first appt in January after asking my GP to refer me for 4 years. I had to have a sleep apnea test in feb and had an endoscopy (had acid reflux) in March. I then got a call end of April offering me a cancellation for my bypass on May 5th. So less than 5 months start to finish.
I didn't think they would allow me the op as I hadn't done a tier 3 but I obviously fitted the criteria. Best thing I've ever done

It is worth letting them know. I had already had ovarian cancer but my Mum died of breast cancer at the age of 36. Her sister died of ovarian cancer, another sister has breast cancer, two of my cousins have had breast cancer and my sister had breast cancer about a year ago. So as you can see there is quite a history of it in my family and breast and ovarian cancer are closely linked. I also have a variant BRCA gene but they can't tell me if it is a cancer causing gene!

If you give them the info about your Mum and they can choose what they want to do with it.
