Medications?

Those of us that have had bypass surgery do we need to take double strength or double quantities of medication because our bowel doesn't absorb as much as a normal bowel? :help2:

Not sure sorry, would need to check with your GP. I find that if anything I need less, particularly of pain meds, and I react differently to them now. I am allergic to penecillin and react to codeine since the op, so it's all different!

Yes, check with your GP. It all depends on the meds if you need to decrease or increase dosage. I am like Shel & am much more sensitive to pain meds so I take half the recommended dosage.

I've found the opposite. My Anti depressants, i've been able to cut down to half, and anything else too. I have found that because of the shortened intestine, the meds get absorbed quicker, rather than it not taking everything out of them. Your liver is what processes medication, and we've not had surgery on it.

Thank's all, very interesting, I didn't expect those replies.
I take Glucosamine and MSM tablets for my knees and it helps me a great deal, also Cod Liver Oil capsules.
I will ask the Doctor when I see him next, but it was worth asking what you all thought and experienced.
Again, thank you. :thankyou:

Hi, Crafty,
I take Glucosamine as well (along with some other supplements like echinacea, co-q10 and omega 3,6,9). Would be really interested to know what your doc says. Will you post info when you have it, please?

Yes of course I will, I've taken it for years and if I stop for any reason I'm in great pain with my knees within three days, it's great stuff.

I'm on liquids, post-op and I'm taking all my tablets, MSM, Omega 3 fish Oil, Cod Liver Oil, Multivitamins for the over fifty's, Prostrate Plus and Saw Palmetto.
I haven't had any adverse effects so I haven't seen the Doctor, but my check up at the hospital is supposed to be in a couple of weeks, I'll ask then and let you know. :fingerscrossed:

Ah, ah - able to rep on this one.

How are you getting on just taking fluids?
I've been trying to do that all day, today, just to get a feel for it. I've done it so far, but think I'm going to find it hard for so long, post op. (Sure it will be worth it, though.)

It's very different post-op, I couldn't have done it pre-op, I don't feel hungry at all you see, I have to have something on the hour and I stick to the dieticians advice, (cos I'm a good boy I am, lol) because I think it's best to do so.

The highlight of the day is my cup of Bovril or Oxo and the soup, but I have to drink so slowly, it takes half an hour to drink each meal, by which time the next one is upon me.

I have to drink slowly because if I swallow too much in one go it doesn't want to go down and it seems to cause an air lock in my inside, causing slight discomfort, gurgling and wind.

I don't feel tired either, sleep like a log and Kate tells me my snoring has stopped, but I do long to chew something again and taste normal food, the family's dinners and bacon cooking smells fantastic, can't wait for those day's again.:eatdrink051:

I was advised by my GP that for pain relief i was only able to take paracetamol post op and nothing with aspirin or ibuprofen in them as this would cause some sort of reaction and make me sick. The way my GP described it was as though this would be a side effect for everybody that has the surgery but check with your own GP first.

Thanks for that Natasha, I will check with him.
Dr Hartland at the Manor, Walsall had a list of all my medication and on it is dispersible aspirin, when I left hospital he told me to continue taking all of my medication as prescribed by my GP, until further notice.
So it seems to me it's another case of contradictory advice yet again, when I go for my check up I'll ask again.:hmm:
