Hi! I am new here. About 2 years ago my GP referred me to the nutritionist who eventually wrote back she felt I should be referred for WLS. My surgery has two GP's and one did not wish to refer me, but did not offer any other support. He completely ignored the nutritionist's letter.

I successfully lost 6 stone 10 years ago and kept it off until I got pregnant. However, it took me 3 years to do with a combination of Slimming World, the Cambridge Diet and lots of exercise. I kept no food in the house once I lost it out of fear of gaining the weight back. In fact, when my husband met me I did not even have the fridge turned on. I gained it all back in pregnancy and have not managed to lose it in the last 6 years.

My BMI is 54. I went to see the other GP in the practice who knew I was always struggling. I asked for support with weekly weigh-ins and he said he thinks WLS is the way I need to go and I meet the criteria. He told me it will take about 6 months.

I have been doing Slim and Save and not been very successful. I have reflux, Hashimoto's disease and a dislocated knee cap from when I fell and receiving physio for it. I had a paraumbilical hernia after giving birth and this was repaired, but other than high cholesterol (not on medication) and asthma, no other issues. I am able to walk with no issues and go up at least 2 flights of stairs. I have always been someone who does not mind walking. I am in Dartford and wondering what is now facing me.

I do know my problem. I am not a sweet/cake/biscuit eater and can live without them. In fact, I am very fussy with my food as well as being a lifelong vegetarian. My main issue is I have a large appetite and had this as a child. I have a lifelong problem of overeating and finding trouble with portion sizes. My grandfather loved to take me to all you can eat places when I was young due to my appetite. But, I also love my carbs and comfort foods like maccy cheese.

Any ideas or advice on what I am facing would be appreciated.

Hello Alyxandra welcome to a fantastic site everyone's friendly and suppotive and no question is daft so fire away
good luck in everything

Thanks! I think my first question is does the nutritionist writing I would benefit from WLS have any bearing? And what is the criteria used? My GP seems to think it will take 6 months in total. Can this be correct for where I live? I am reading that people have to attend some sort of weight loss management thing.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I had a bypass a little over a month ago, but I had it done privately so can't be much help on the NHS route I'm afraid.

You'll find loads of people here who will be able to answer your questions

Hi Alyxzandra

I too am in Kent. I think you will probably be referred to 4healthy weight or the why weight program you can find more information on this weight management company if you google bariatric consultancy 4healthy weight .

As your BMI is over 50 the NICE guidelines state bariatric surgery is recommended as a first-line option (instead of lifestyle interventions or drug treatment).
I'd imagine you would be referred under tier4 so you will be assessed to find out if they feel your a good candidate for surgery, and this stage is used for getting you ready for surgery so 6 months sounds about right :)

My BMI is under 50 (only just!) and I am required to do a full years weight management with no assurance of surgery, hope this helps x
