Hi

I posted here a couple of times last year and lurk every now and then so I thought I would re-introduce myself.

I approached my GP for bariatric surgery last year and was sent to see a dietician and diabetic specialist (I'm not even diabetic), then I heard nothing back. I let it drop because being in Wales everyone I spoke to 'off the record' said I had no chance of getting it as I was "only 26 stone" and have no associated health issues (besides freaky periods, skin problems and breathlessness).

Anywho, I could kick myself for giving up on it last year and not pushing for it. I went to my GP again on the 2nd September and asked him to refer me to the Bariatric Surgeon at Morriston Hospital in Swansea. He was happy to do this. I have been phoning Morriston Hospital every week to see if I am in the system but there's still nothing on the screen for me.

So this is where I am currently. I spoke the BigDaveWLS on twitter (I'm not 100% sure what his username is on here) and he says that I need to get my GP to apply for funding for me as even if I get in to see the surgeon soon all the admin stuff will need to be sorted. It's really silly but I'm really nervous and shy about phoning or going down to see the GP to ask him to do this. I'm not a very pushy person, I struggle to get my point across. The GP receptionist is horrible and I always freeze up on the phone to her.

Does anyone have any other advice on the process in Wales? Tips and tricks for moving it along? And can anyone tell me how to work up some guts to start pushing? I want this surgery so badly WHY can't I make myself be pushier? It's just not my nature and I need to change that. :sigh:

I promise to get more active on here, I really love this place. I think maybe I just get a bit jealous of everyone heading somewhere and me feeling like I'm not.

Hope everyone is enjoying the sunshine! xoxo

Can't help at all Rainbow as I am in Sheffield, but just wanted to offer you my good wishes with your struggle ... I don't think Wales makes it easy for their patients, though, so you are not alone ... someone will be along soon with more constructive help, I am sure .. xxx :)

Hi rainbow im from Wales too but im in Port Talbot, not far from u, i went to GP to be refered and he did but he also said that Wales is the hardest place to get bariatris surgery on the nhs, as i had no health probs there would b no chance of me getting funding, he also said that one of his patients who was heavier than me had got referd back to docs, tha y i decided on going private.
I would certainly keep on to the docs and morriston hosp cause there no harm in doing that is there! as for the receptionist id complain if she is making u uncomfortable they should do that, they should be helpful, when ur in that GP room there only u n doc so just come out n ask, also i think his name is bigdave on here too lol

hope this has helped and u get to hear some news soon xxx
