Hi, newbie from south Wales

Hi, I'm Mel, 39 from south Wales. I'm just starting my weight loss surgery process after having funding approved for surgery in Morriston hospital, Swansea. I'm currently doing slimming world in the meantime as I'm trying to lose as much as possible. Currently I'm 323lb and desperately unhappy with how I look and how my weight affects EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE.

I will have an appointment with the clinical nurse specialist for an educational session in March then see the surgeon 4 to 6 weeks later. Not sure how it all goes from there but guess I'll know more next month.

Has anyone been to Morriston hospital or been referred there?

I'm keen to find out more about the whole process and if there are any support groups in the area?

Thanks all xx

Just wanted to say hi and welcome, I too was over 300lbs (315lbs) now I'm half the woman I was, good luck with it all xx

Hi butterfly lady, it just seems to be such a lot to lose. I've had success before but it comes back and brings a friend! I'm determined this is the right thing to do, just have to convince my kids but I'll do that by learning as much as possible.

I had my heart set on sleeve gastrectomy but saw something that said RNY would be better suited but I'll see what the surgeon says.

I'm just not good at patience, I keep waiting for the appointment letter for the nurse, I know it's coming, but I want it now lol xx

Yes it does seem a lot but its amazing how quickly it comes off I had my Bypass late Nov 2013 :)

That's good hun. How have you found it? I can't see profile things / stats on my app, which op did you have? Honestly I can't wait, I can't really think of anything else since finding out I got the funding x

I had a Bypass in Nov 2013, I have been really lucky and sailed thru it all :)

That's good hun. I had a good chat with my hubby last night and finally admitted how much I weighed and he's been really good so far. I can't believe I let myself get this heavy.

Still, it's the last time I'll be this size again so just have to be positive x

Hello newbie!

Hi Mel,

I'm from Cardiff & looking at having a sleeve at the Vale hospital & it would be the same surgeon as your having. Have you met him yet?

Elaine x

Hi elaine,

I've not met him yet because there has been a delay with the appointment.

I should have been seeing the nurse this month and the surgeon in April but one of the surgeons is off due to a car crash until April.

Have you tried to be referred via the NHS hun? It's sooooo hard in Wales isn't it!

I'm in Barry so not far from you. Do you know of any support groups near us?

X

Hi Mel,

I've not tried asking cos I've looked on NHS Direct Wales website & I don't meet the criteria. My BMI is 37 & you have to be 50 plus with an obesity related illness to qualify.

I'm going to ring & get an appointment this week & will get a bank loan to pay.

Elaine x

Yeah I know what you mean. I wish I was in a position to pay for it myself, it puts you more in control.

I'm grateful for the funding, don't get me wrong, I'm just not very good at being patient. I'm suffering with my back something awful and I'm hoping it will improve with weight loss.

I'm doing slimming world to give myself the best chance possible and have binned the tablets that made me gain a ton of weight.

There are quite a few places he works privately and the nurse I've been speaking to in my GP surgery used to work there and said he's lovely.

Let me know how you get on xx

I hope they get a move on for you. I'm currently doing SW as well but fed up of giving it 100% & losing piddly half a pound here or there, it gets me down. Been dieting on & off for 20 blinking years & need to nip it in the bud!

Me too, I'm almost obsessing about it!

I've done sw a few times before and lost weight, but I fall off the wagon and put it back on, along with a bit extra!

I rejoined 5th of January and only just got 8.5lbs off this week, whereas in the past I've lost that in a fortnight. Talk about slow loss! I'm trying really hard too which is frustrating as hell. I've started to log my food this week which is helping as I'm thinking before I go raid the cupboards lol.

Hi ladylou, I'm really slow this time, but at least it's coming off. Lost 11.5lbs since 5th of January.

I should be seeing the nurse this month and the surgeon 4 to 6 weeks later but the surgeon has been injured in a car accident so my appointment will be next month now (hopefully).

It looks likely that I won't have my surgery until next year because of the assessment process which will take about 8 months then I'll go on the waiting list for the surgery ???.

How are you doing? Xx
