Pre NHS seminar. What should I be doing now?

Totally - ask to be tested! I should have said that :)

I only knew about mine before because it got so bad I couldn't drive. But I prob had it for years before it got that bad.

And by the way, for most people, no need to stay in a sleep clinic. Most people will just have to borrow a monitoring device from hospital and take it home for a normal night's sleep.

My son had a sleep test for sleep apnea a few years ago and we borrowed a machine. It's defiantly looking like I have it, I feel so tired when I wake up like iv not slept for very long, plus I wake all the time to roll over or go to the toilet. I have woken myself from snoring or weird grunts but I only do that now and again x

Ah that's good. Glad you know what's what, then :)

Sounds like you may well have it. I was waking myself up every 2 minutes - not that I realised most of the time!

Can someone tell me please, when do you get told how much weight to lose? I had an appointment with a specialist around March time and she referred me to the dietician (have my final group this week) the psychiatrist and the Cornwall Healthy Weight course. The course is run over 12 weeks and they teach you about nutrition, etc. I have lost 1st 5lb in 6 weeks so it's not like I am doing nothing but at no time have I ever been told to lose a certain amount of weight. The specialist said she will fast track me due to family and personal history of cancer.

Hiya Gladys,

1 st 5 in 6 weeks - that's bloomin awesome! Well done :)

I didn't get a target until I started Tier 3, i.e. started seeing the Specialist Weight Management Services for whole county rather than district/GP services. Once I started seeing them, I got told for sure at my third one-to-one appointment, prior to starting the seminars (They start next month for me). I had to actively ask about the target (though she may have been due to tell me later in the same meeting - can't be sure!) cos I wanted to know what the deal was.

The order of my SWMS appts has been 3 one-to-ones with psychiatrist who is my 'key' member of staff in SWMS, then an appointment with the SWMS dietician, and then I'm into my 12 SWMS seminars with occasional check-ins with my key lady. I'm not sure if your appointments have been as part of Tier 3 or arranged more locally prior to you joining Tier 3?

I'd ask someone at the next opportunity to make sure the target-setting hasn't fallen through the net. Make it clear you want to count the loss from the very beginning of your engagement with Tier 3. I requested that in my meetings because I was worried about my hard work not counting :)

I hope that helps xxx

PS: Really glad they're going to fast-track you. Hopefully will mean smaller percentage and shorter wait xxx

Hi there just wanted to share my journey & timescale with you guys (hope you don't mind). I'm with aintree hospital Liverpool, I've been going there for 11 months & started off by seeing my consultant who has been fantastic, I asked straight out what happens next & he told me there and them I would have to be with them at least 12 months. I saw the dietician and psychiatrist on the same day.. I didn't have a particular target they just wanted to see any form of weight loss. I attended an education session and support group and my last appointment was July 8th 2015 I had lost 9.4kg! I have been approved for surgery and am having my pre-op on 11th of September. I'm scared, excited and nervous but I know I'm doing the right thing for me and my family. So sorry for the long post but I wanted to share my timescale with you guys xx

Thanks so much, Hayley! And congrats with the weight loss! That's really so great :)

And not long to go now then! Woohoo!

That's reassuring that some places don't have strict targets, and maybe that's the case with Cornwall where Gladys is? I know Gloucestershire give targets but they do say that it's not the be-all and end-all and they look at the whole situation.

Keep us updated! Good luck :) xxx

Thank you hun. I'm really nervous but I know doing what best for me & my husband and family are all really supportive so I'm lucky there.

I don't think everywhere is the same, I've read lots of people's diaries on here and I know some people have been going for a long time & still no closer to surgery but that's defiantly not the case everywhere and more often than not it 12-18 months with the programme before been referred xx

I'm good thanks, Hayley. How are you?

Just continuing to get my head around everything as much as poss before seminars begin on 17th September (bi-weekly from then until mid-Jan)

I did have a stupid moment where I realised I'd written down all the dates for the seminars in my diary and had gone over and over them to make sure I'd got them all right... only to forget to actually confirm with the hospital! Lol. Luckily they phoned me to check rather than just replacing me with someone else. Couldn't believe I'd been so scatty over something I care about so much.

Watching a ton of YouTube Vlogs of post-surgery folks and reading as much as I can. Feeling buoyed up by weight loss, by dietician's positivity and by the fact I'll be on the quicker turnaround route. It all helps!

I'm ok, had my pre-op appointment cancelled for the 11th September :( really upset about it as they changed it too 23rd October! Gotta wait an extra 10 weeks :(. Aww at least they phoned to check Hun, that was lucky! I've research so much I think my head will explode but it's good the more you research the more sure you become, it confirms what you already know x

That's so rubbish :( But good that you're nearly at the last hurdle - so yay for that! But even at my early stage I can appreciate that op day can't come soon enough, and you must feel like it's already been a lifetime. I think once you make the decision to get on the pathway to an op we want it done yesterday! I hope the time passes quickly now for you xxx

Yeah it's so hard when you've already worked so hard and then you feel like your getting somewhere and everything slows down. I'm think my just upset cos I've been trying or this op for 10 years now :( and it's only this past year that I've actually been taken seriously! It's usually the same old for the gp "lose weight" "do this, do that" easy to say, not so easy to so. As every one on here knows! I'm sure it will pass quickly :/ xx.
