sleep apnoea

I was just wondering how many people have this? :sigh:

I hadn't a clue I had it until my referral to SRH for wls....I did the sleepiness score and the result was off the scale!

I'm treated now and feel LOADS better but I'm told after wls it will most likely go completely!

so how many more like me? I'm just curious!
also wondering if you have to take your cpap machine into hospital with you ?

charis... is this where they ask you questions on that form?.. i put that i sleep well which i do but sleep aponia what is it?... and if you do have it do you go on cpap??... i dont understand hunni lol you ll have to explain to me what it is and what symptoms you have xxx

i tested high on the form but did the test where you wear the thing on your finger all night and they said I don't have sleep apnoea. I was rather hoping I had it because it would automatically get me funding for the op but hey ho.

Hi Kelli

sleep apnoea is detected by 2 main things.....extreme tiredness/sleepiness during the day.......like you fall asleep watching tv, reading, in the middle of a conversation
and snoring. Mine (snoring) was so loud it was becoming legendary. :character00100:

What happens is that as you sleep, your airways 'collapse' - the airway is shut..so you stop breathing for a few seconds....then your brain is triggered to wake you up...sometimes people are aware of gasping or choking in the night.

tests showed I was waking up every 2 and a half minutes. So basically you never get into a deep sleep (REM sleep)..........and therefore your quality of rest is RUBBISH........and you're tired all the time.

it's treated with a cpap machine. CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure. You wear a mask over your nose or nose and mouth as you sleep. The high air pressure basically splints your airway open... a bit like a balloon filed with air.
so...no choking, no snoring!!!!!!!!! deep sleep....feel rested when awake!

untreated sleep apnoea can eventually kill ....it can lead to high BP, heart failure, strokes. Horrible......scary..........and if I'd never asked for wls I wouldn't have known! :D

o wow eee.. scary stuff thanks for that charis, i am tired during the day but i sleep well at night ..... i have two young boys tho so i think that may be the reason :) very interesting read tho so thankyou xx

I have lots of sleep issues but didnt think I actually had sleep apneoa, however the tests showed that I have mild sleep apneoa but not enough to be given CPAP I also have poor sleep efficency. Im always tired even though I sleep a lot due to depression. They said I should find an improvement after surgery.

I had been diagnosed with sleep apnea a couple of years before my wls, in fact it was a contributing factor why I wanted to go for wls, the thought of using a CPAP for the rest of my life was not very appealing.

I managed to stop using the CPAP about 4 months post-op, but I suspect I could have stopped earlier. It becomes a way of life and like anything it takes confidence to stop using something that has kept you alive. I was pleased to have the CPAP to fix the problem, but even happier to be able to kick it into touch.
HTH. xx

I have sleep apnoea and have worn a full face mask at night for well over a year now. I also snored very badly too. Since wearing the mask, my snoring at night has stopped, but I can't wait to stop wearing it. It has to go everywhere with me when I'm away from home. I also found that if I tried to have a nap say in the afternoon without my mask I was continually waking myself up snoring, so although I hate it mask is my friend at the moment.

I know what you mean zns, but actually the surgeon at SRH said the bypass had a 100% success rate of curing sleep apnoea. I have to admit I was surprised.

It took me ages to get used to the mask as I suffer from claustrophobia, but eventually after a bit of trial and error, the wonderful Janey (sleep nurse specialist in York) found me a teeny tiny nose mask tat I can cope with. I really like it as I often used to wake myself up snoring!...and was also terribly embarrassed by how bad it was! I find the cpap quite comforting now!

I have it too although mine is mild. When I was diagnosed I told the consultant that I had applied for wls and he said well we will start you on treatment as they will want you to have been on it for 3 months at least. So I have a cpap and yes I have to take it into hospital with me. I was told I will probably wake up from the surgery with it on.

I too don't like things over my face so the specialist nurse gave me a nose one to try first and I panicked straight away. I then tried the full face one over the nose and mouth and no problem with that. I have been told after the surgery that I probably won't need it when the weight has started to come off.

Probably because all their patients have had it relating to their size, but there are other causes x

it's one of the biggest killers of obese people, more likely to die of suffovation due to sleep apnoea than a heart attack or stroke etc!! but as said, it's a big contributing factor to high BP, heart failure, strokes
