Spare skin?

Hi All

I've just agreed to have a bypass, saw the surgeon yesterday for first consultation. Am absolutely terrified but this is the last thing to try.

One of the things I'm frightened of is being left with lots of spare skin - does this happen a lot? What are people's experiences generally?

Thank you!

A lot depends on how old you are, how much overweight you are & basically genes. :(:( I have lost over 7stone & do have loose skin but better than being diabetic, hypertensive & various other life threatening illnesses that come along with being vastly overweight. Hope you come to be OK with this when you are a bit more used to having the op ... Good Luck xxx :):)

I've noticed that I have some already at 4 weeks post op but I'm losing so many inches so fast at the moment it probably needs some time to catch up. I'm not overly worried about it as I'm not going to be walking around in my undies all the time so no-one but nearest and dearest and me will see it. Think about how your health will benefit and how clothes will look instead and focus on the positive. Let us know when you have your date.

so glad this topisc has been raised, i heard that if you exercise throughout you will reduce the amount of excess skin, aswell as eating plenty of protiens, exfoliating daily and i for one am gonna get me some cocoa butter the pregnant women use for strect marks as that is proven to make the skin supple and add elasticity, anyone shed anymore tricks on the subject???

My husband was rather large when I met him. He managed to lose the weight through dieting and exercise (lucky him). He did have loose skin, which did seem to disappear over a couple of years and he hasn't had it for years now. I wonder if this is why we are expected to maintain for a couple of years before contemplating haveing anything removed?

i think we have to maintain it that long as optimal results are expected within 18 months to 2 yrs, and if u have skin removed before it may not be affective

I have lost over 8 and a half stone in the last 6 months so I have baggy skin as it hasn't had a chance to catch me up but I am using the bump cream and exercising to tone and hopefully as I am under 30 it will go back a little as I don't think I could do plastics one I can't afford it and had to sign to say I wouldn't ask the NHS for it. But two I want a baby so no point having a tummy tuck then stretching it with a baby.
I would rather the skin to the fat any day though.

It is an unfortunate side effect & very dependant on age. Skin looses it elasticity with age & rarely goes back even with intense focused exercise. I am experiencing more wobbly skin on tops of arms & legs. Although big before was solid. Tummy not suffering much at mo.
following physioexercise program, 3 sessions aqua aerobics per week, slendertone abs & arms while watching TV& biooil everyday. Scars gone. 3 months & 6 1/2 stones lost post op.

Bio oil or the cheaper version rescue oil, Is supposed to be better than coco butter. I'm going to try building up my muscles to fit my skin after my op. had anyone tried this ? Or does it work ?

Hi have lost 7 stone and my skin is fine . Not perfect but I am 49 so I would expect some loose skin on my arms but I have been so lucky . I think it has more to do with the speed you lose the weight .my sister said last week how good my skin is looking and coming from her it must look ok !
