Vitamins & Minerals

Get your GP to prescribe you Forceval, it is a super strength multi vit and mineral and far better than anything you will buy over the counter. With malabsorption you need to ensure you have adequate vits and minerals.

I was prescribed Forceval and then suddenly I broke out in a horrible red rash all over my arms. I eventually went to my doctor after researching what was in the pills. I found that there are two colourings in them that are known to cause problems in some people, so he took me off of them and I went onto an over the counter multi vitamin and mineral as he said that he couldnt prescribe anything else. The rash slowly eased off and is now gone.
So Forceval IS the best one to have but if you get it and cant tolerate it dont feel too bad about it, many take over the counter ones and are fine with them.

My GP says he is not allowed to prescribe vitamins and my bariatric team just told me to buy an A-Z multi vitamin and mineral one x

Not allowed pish. Doesn't want to budget the expense of them more like!

I was prescribed selenase and zincasol when my hair started thinning, but I didn;t take them long and just put up with it.

Yeah thats more like it! Tight ******* x

Spoke to my doc on the phone this morning (our practice is so bad, I couldn't even get an appointment). I asked about Forceval and she said she would check if she could prescribe it but thought they may only be allowed to prescribe a 'generic' multi-vit. Great. I'll probably end up buying them myself.

My dietician told to just buy a generic A-Z one too. I've just bought a 9 month supply from Boots!

But I will be being prescribed calcium, iron and Vit B12 injections I think

It was my last GP that said that they couldnt prescribe me anything else, he said they definately could prescribe 'over-the-counter vits. I have left that practice now though. I will see what my bloods show when they get tested next month, if Im healthy then Ill stick to my current vitamins but if not I will have a good chat with my new GP, he is a lovely man, easier to talk to thank God! lol
My last GP runs his practice like a business and its not all about the patient, its all about the money!

sadly my pratice is also becoming this way. I think it's the practice manager to blame. I have had a fight on to get Zoton fasttab rather than capsules, and will only get it now because the hospital says I must!

Yes, send the B12 back. Your intestines can't absorb B12 post op, hence why most surgeons advise 3 monthly injections.

I too can't take Forceval as I know I have a severe allergy to one of the colourings in it.

I have Centrum on prescription as well as the special ADEK vits I need for my op and calcium and vit D I need for a parathyroid problem.

According to our local specialist dietician Sanatogen A-Z is the best over the counter multi vit with Tescos a close second. If you spend half your life reading the labels they all have
a bit more of this and a bit less of that than each other!!

Some people have Vit B12 tablets prescribed - but its more usual to ahve an injection - if you need it.

Hair loss affects nearly everyone - and I don't think any supplement helps it.

More important is regular blood tests so that any problems can be helped as they occur - it was low zinc and calcium with me last time.

Good luck xxx

That's interesting Shelbell, i didn't realise that was the reason for the injections (thought it was just not enough B12 being provided by food).
