Hola :)

I'm lucky enough to be having my op at north tees on May 7th after a very quick turnaround (seminar 23rd of jan!). I'm currently on the pre op diet which is going as good as it can be, though not overly joyful! Lol! I understand what happens when I get to the hospital, and what the procedures are before my op. But then, I have no idea? Do I wake up on the ward? What will I have on? Will I be able to put my pj's on? Will I be on a drip? I literally have no idea so any info would be tremendous :)

Xx

Not sure about others but you will wake up in recovery and transferred to your room / ward once you are stable and pain medication etc stable. I was given a gown to wear could keep my knickers on! and some very sexy pressure socks which i was told we shiukd keep in for 6 weeks? i had a drip in until the next morning but I could get up and go to the toilet by taking it with me. I also had some weird pressure cuffs on my calfs to try to prevent deep vein I suppose. I remember them inflating and deflating all night and because so much fluid was going in I kept needing a wee and I had to keep taking these cuffs off and walk my drip. It was a real saga that by mid way through the night I could do without calling the nurses for assistance.

If in honest I can't remember a lot about immediately after the op. I remember I had my delightful ted stockings on and a huge theatre gown. I can remember being wheeled back to the ward, but nothing about recovery.

I went down for my op about 10 and woke up in recovery and taken to my room pretty promptly, think I was back by 12.30-1. I was not in any pain but remember feeling uber car sick with all the twists and turns of the corridor! I also had the flowtrons (pressure cuffs) on my legs to prevent DVT and I must say they where dead comfy I wish I could bring them home!!
For the remainder of that first day I was sleeping pretty much through, curtesy of an indwelling catheter and steady flow of morphine. The day after the catheter came out and I was able to have a shower and start to explore the hospital by going for little walks. Still not in any pain and the morphine was replaced by IV paracetamol. I was still really tired and slept loads. My biggest problem post op was a really tender cannula in my hand.
There may be small variations between hospitals.

Hi. I am the same as Sar. I had no pain, I didn't have any morphine, I didn't have a catheter but I had a drain in my stomach.mi was on a drip for 24 hours but I did have horrendous and I mean horrendous nausea upon waking up from the anthestisia for about 5 hours!!! I also had 2 canulars in my hand one of which was very sore and to this day has left a lovely little scar in my hand which will remind me for the rest of my life..lol.

Good luck. X

Hi

No pain, no catheter woke up on the ward can't remember been in recovery. Phoned hubby then went to sleep for about 4 hrs lol.

Thanks everyone! It's the fear of the unknown lol I want to know everything, makes me feel better about it!! 10 days and counting!!! Eeeek! Xx

Hi Kelly, after my bypass I woke up in hdu with a catheter in & attached to a morphine pump plus the inflatable things on my legs. The catheter was to monitor the dye that they put in to test the bypass for leaks... it turns your pee forest green!! I spent 24 hrs in hdu but can't remember much about it due to the morphine (apparently I made some very funny phone calls & sent some very funny texts!). I was then moved onto a regular ward the following day where they encouraged me to get up & move around ASAP plus i started sipping water... very naughtily went for a cheeky smoke later that day & I was discharged on the Saturday after having my op on the Thursday :) x

Are you having a sleeve? I see this is posted in the sleeve area.
I woke up from my sleeve with a tube up my nose, down my throat and into my stomach to drain bleeding from inside the stomach. I also had a drain in my abdomen and a drip and pain pump.

Unfortunately, I can't say that it was all fine and pain free.....far from it in fact. I do react badly to anaesthetics and opiate drugs anyway but the tube into my stomach made me retch and retch and retch some more. I was given more anti sickness shots and stayed in recovery a long time as a result.

I was only able to come to and shuffle to the loo later in the day after that tube was removed.

I understand that it is common with the sleeve to have lots of nausea and this was certainly the case for me. I ended up staying 3 nights as they said I wasn't well enough to go home on the 3rd day, but felt so much better on day 4 before release it was ridiculous.

After that I made a rapid recovery but still had pain and discomfort at home which I treated only with paracetamol (calpol actually) as I hated the way the dihydrocodein made me feel.

All this said (and I'm not trying to scare you, just give and honest reflection of my experience) it was as bad as I'd thought it would be but no worse. It was manageable and for a relatively short time. I found that getting up and about as soon as possible really helped the rotten wind pains and walked little circuits as much as possible.

It's all a dim and distant memory now and was soooo worth it! I won't actually but I'm sure you'll catch my meaning when I say, I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Good luck with your op, here's hoping you have a pain free experience like some of the others but either way that it's successful and safe. Look forward to hearing about your progress very soon. x

Hi Kelly! I would also say it was as bad as I expected but I was ok! Woke up in lots of pain and the drain really bothered me a lot. Nurse said best to wait till drip goes before getting into own pyjamas. I also felt sick and sleepy but by day 2 felt a million times better! My hubby said when he saw me the first day and night he thought I would be in hospital for a week but then second evening huge change and I went home after 2 night stay. Best of luck!!

Yes that is optimistic- how old are your kids? Mine are 10,6 and 2 and I had to tell my 10 year old as I couldn't lift the baby and also it hurt when I coughed or laughed for a week after. And I shipped them off to my mums lol

I experienced no pain, no sickness. Did not require a drain. Did not have any pain killers other than paracetamol.

I got up and put my pj's on just after I came round. I was prepared to be in agony and my husband was prepared to be my slave :) as it happened the only pain I had was from the cannula bruise.

An amazing pain free experience and I truly hope yours is the same xx

First thing is breath in and thank God you made it, then grab hold of your arse because you're in for the ride of your life.

You'll be in a gown and depending upon your needs will either be on the ward or HDU. They will get you out of bed and walking up and down really quickly, and the physioterorist will show you some gentle abdominal exercises too. Best thing is your life will never be the same and so much better than just now

Good luck I'm a little jealous of you right now XXX

Thanks for all the replies everyone! Yes in getting a sleeve, tomorrow infact! Argh! I've just finished my last shift at work n now it's really hit home! I'm terrified of the unknown.... But this time tomorrow ill be done and dusted n back on the ward! Op at 8 as consultant wants to do me first! I'm not expecting a pain free time, though would be nice lol! Here's to a thinner healthier me eh!! Eeek xx
