Morning all,

Been thinking again lol. What and who decide what sort of surgery band v bypass is most suitable. Anyone know the criteria - eating pattens which contribute to the decision?

:confused:Linski

Phew..... finally up to 50 posts - Phatmomma I will be private messaging you soon and driving you mad with all my questions! xx

At last lol.... I've pm'd you re coffee!

I think it's best to decide on eating habits, originally i wanted a band but after talking to a surgeon in B'ham he told me a bypass would be better. When i had my surgery in June Mr Khan asked if i'd rather a band but i knew the bypass was better for me... My diabetes is hopefully going into remission, i need to get a blood test done now....

I've loved my bypass since early days and have been very lucky xx

Hi Linski,

My hospital offers all surgeries and outlines the likely weight loss for each. Ultimately they let the patient decide based on the information they give you.

The only thing that is different at my hospital is that if your eating problems are emotional, they insist you have counselling for a short time. I also found that there is a weight loss surgery for people who know that they are likely to over eat but that the side effect is quite smelly bowel movements.

The great thing about weight loss surgery seems to be that the surgeons are all very committed to helping us to regain our lost selves and are very helpful and supportive in explaining the pro's and con's of each proceedure.

Hope this helps! xx

I think they prefer a bypass if you have diabetes because apparently the blood sugars come down really quickly - even before you start losing weight - mine went from 13 to 5 from the day before the operation to the day after the operation. I think its to do with whether you are a bulk eater as well and whether you eat sugary things like chocolate/cake as you dump with a gastric bypass and are therefore unlikely to eat the with the GB. Depends on the hospital though.

Thank you ladies I have my appointment wednesday and will update on here. I am hoping for a bypass but will have to bed led bybthe experts.
Kindest regards

Linski

You may be really surprised at just how involved you are in this process. They tend to be really keen to see that you have done your research and that you understand the long term implications of weight loss surgery.

Hope your appointment goes really well and that you get the help and support you need. xx

Thanks annie, i am trying to get all the info I can. Too be honest I have really thought about the long term side of things and I am more confident than ever its the right decision. Just praying they agree and the wait isn't too long. Have they said how long you will have to wait for yours?

I originally wanted a band. But after hearing others talking about their experiences on here, at hospital & support group, I started swaying towards bypass. So when Mr Small offered me that I jumped at the chance...

Although i am at the start of my journey, and haven't spoken to a anyone about this,I too wanted the band.

then I came on this site and realised a bypass is for me...(although i am not ruling out the sleeve)
i want to try and get my diabetes under control.

Hi Linski,

Things seem to work differently at each hospital. I see the Surgeon and Anaesthetist on the 15th of September and it could be 2 weeks after that.

I have been pursuing this for a long time (2007) and found out at the last minute that my funding had not been agreed. It was a complete nightmare and resulted in me having to go right back to the start again. Thankfully I am nearly there now and problems like this are rare.

Wishing you a speedy journey. xx

Linski you will have a massive say in what surgery you have! If you know what you want beforehand then stick to your guns hun! I'm a huge fan of the bypass, i love sweet stuff and was hoping to be a dumper but it appears i am not! I've had a lovely slice of homemade sponge at my grandsons christening/first birthday party last week and no side effects, i also can eat an egg custard with no effect, i am ignoring chocolate like the plague as when i am an emotional wreck that is my best friend. I'm glad to have excluded chocolate as my bff and don't want to take him back xxx

Thanks Julie, bypass is my first option as I eat sweet things and from the research I have done seems to be what will suit best. Its the first thing I think of every morning and its driving me mad lol! I am going to come to the support meeting tomorrow all being well. Ilook forward to meeting everyone. Only just logged on any news on K8y yet?

Thanks Annie, You certainly have waited your turn! I hope you get your date, 2 years would have driven me mad by now. I want a bypass if possible and am eagerly awaiting seeing them on wednesday.

Hi Jo

Hi Jo, yeah I want the bypass too, have you been waiting long?

Hi Lisa - what is the sleeve?
Linski x
Just type gastric sleeve into google...or search for info on this site.
Not all hospitals do it though(from what i have researched)
I haven't seen anyone yet from my bariatric team so I don't have enough information on this subject yet(apart from what I have researched on the web)

I think mixman is the man to talk to on here regarding the sleeve.

The Gastric Sleeve is offered at the L&D but I was told that the weight loss would not be likely to be as good as could be expected with the bypass.
