Do you wear a Medi Alert Bracelet?

And if you do what does it say?

Have heard conflicting opinions as to if people who have had weight loss surgery should wear one or not. Also conflicting things written on them.

I think its a good idea but unsure what to say on it.

I should probably wear one for my other problems, but don't. Will be interesting to read other's opinions on these for post op.

most people get a medical card to carry in purse or wallet but thats not much use as a paramedic wouldnt rifle through a purse to find it an emergeny the medi bracelets are a better idea as they can visually see that in an emergency.

i think i will buy one as my ports in my chest right between my boobs, and i dont know if that would effect any kind chest compressions, but i do know my port sits right where the chest compressions would be done.

Thanks Liz, just ordered one of the bracelets, got some of my illnesses and gastric bypass on it, and no penecillin/morphine. Had to get one that could be engraved both sides lol. hubby says do they do breifcases as would need something that big for all my problems!

Hiya

I was going to get one made for my bypass . but i spoke about it at my clinic and they said that there no no real reason why i need one.

The drugs we cant take are just oral and if we are not abl eto speak after a accident then they wouldnt give us any oral drugs they would be injections.

In other words bypassers No NAIDs ( Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) oral

But having a Medi alert braclet wont hurt anyone.

:D lol get a locket one with a dongle in that they can plug in to there lap top hehe:eek:

LMAO Liz now why didn't I think of that?

Caz, the one I got was £34, which for a piece of jewellery I expect to last a good few years and which could possibly make a huge difference to me medically seems like a bargain :)

Sorry I meant no offence to anyone who bought one but I don't have an income so they seem very expensive to me.

Also the only one I like is the heart bracelet.

;) santas coming soon maybe put one on your wish list !:)

If we have had a bypass how vulnerable is our stomachs (when fully healed) ie if someone punched us in the stomach etc....not that I am planning on being punched just curious, I am concerned it might pop!!! daft I know...xx

No offence taken Caz, costs in general are subjective so different people see them differently. The prices on there vary a lot and one of the ones I liked was nearly £75 lol, so I was just saying that there are some cheaper ones, and for me it's about more than just the bypass as I have a complex medical file.

most good jewlers do these bracelets, and would prob let you pay weekly.

just a thought.

When all healed your much the same as you were.

Being a bad boy ive been in 2 fights since my bypass . ( Not my own fault :D )

And ive got a good bill of health ( besides my gallstones )

So no worries

Thanks for that its a worry off my mind, I have visions of one of my cats jumping off somewhere and landing on my stomach and it popping, at least I can now rest easy...xx

Dont want to pee on anyone's bonfire here but I have been told by ambulance staff that the only emblems they take as genuine are the official Medic Alert ones like I wear. Medic Alert is a registered Charity and the bracelet contains a phone number and identification number on the back and along with your most important details engraved on the bracelet, the data base which they can access in an emergency can contain much more information about you. You do get a card to go with it to keep in your handbag. Things like SOS Talisman, are more recent copies of the original Medic Alert Foundation emblems that have been around for years. Aparently, although many people put their genuine information in these, some people fill in illnesses that are self diagnosed and which in a real life emergency could be more harmful to them if not treated correctly. The information on a Medic Alert Foundation emblem is usually certified by a Doctor before it is put on the system. The link for Medic Alert Foundation is: The MedicAlert® Foundation (NoI don't work for them or represent them in any way, I just have a bracelet that I've had to wear because of my disabilities for many years). My first bracelet was reduced in price as I was on Income Support when I applied, but my more recent one I was able to buy myself. They do various ones including watches.....how cool is that !

I shall certainly be having a new bracelet made up once I've had my op, as I want anyone to be aware of how my plumbing works afterwards ;)

Hope this helps.

they have some very nice items gerry, a watch is very cool. i may invest in 1 myself.

Point of interest was told to carry around a medi alert braclet as bypassers cant have endiscope (think thats the right spelling!) down their throat in case the scope damages their pouches.

good point caroline !
