Smoking

So, I have been told I have to quit smoking for the op. I am now 11 days away and still smoking :-( dieting and no smoking just makes me want to cry!! Any advise from anyone that's been in a similar position? X

Just do it! The thought of giving up is worse than doing it. You're operation risk is greatly reduced if your not smoking. Good luck

I'm not sure the thought is worse, I think the reality is. I've tried so many times and I spend pretty much every day crying like a baby lol.

Giving up smoking is a very hard thing to do, without doubt! Take each day at a time, after 72 hours the nicotine is out your system. As my mum always used to say to me, never give up giving up. The freedom from cigarettes is the best thing about quitting, not being controlled by a silly white stick! U just gotta set your mind to it & stop. Remove everything smoking related, throw it away!

There are so many great things that can help you, tablets, ecigs, etc I gave up over 5 years ago best thing ever :)

I had to give up for my op or NO op that in itself helped :) go docs and ask about champix i gave up back last year and no going back :) x x x gl

I too gave up with champix, you dont have time before your op for that so maybe buy some patches or an inhalator for now.

The anaesthetist can refuse you if you still smoke due to the added risks, also smoking slows the recovery rate... saying that I was advised to give up at least 6 weeks before but nobody asked if I actually did (I was gutted I wanted to brag on 4 months lol 5 months now)

Good Luck!!

Yes, champix would take too long to get into your system plus it can have some very negative side effects on your mood etc.

I really feel for you and can only advise you to take each day at a time. Try to 'talk yourself into waiting' every time you fancy a cigarette i.e. no, I won't have one now, I'll wait...It might help you to significantly cut down and hopefully, once you have the surgery, you won't feel like smoking afterwards.

I'll keep everything crossed for you - just remember, your doing this for YOU, your health, your body etc.

I was a very heavy smoker. I tried and tried found it harder than cutting down on food. I found champix did mot work for me but it dies for a lot of peops. I found the patches and little inhalator worked for me. It was my 6th attempt at giving up and it eventually worked. Im now 5 years smoke free . Thank God I feel so much better. I had counselling at the non smoking service with my docs surgery . They help you give you up lifting leaflets on all the benefits and the dangers of continuing. You can do it . You are at greater risk with surgery. When i smoked and i had an op 9 yrs ago when i woke up from the op my chest was awful it was horrid feeling of not able to get my breath very frightening they said that was down to the fact at the time that i smoked and i had longer in recovery ad my oxygen levels was dangerously low.please be careful think of your health it will benefit you and your fam long term. Dont want to frighten you just want to help! When i went to the dietician said they wouldn't operate on me unless i gave ip smoking i was proud to say i stopped five years ago. You can do it.

Thanks all. I asked for Champix about 1 year ago and wasn't allowed it. Docs told me because of my long history of depression I wasn't allowed to take them. I've got an electric Ciggy and know I need to start using it. I've lost the charger so plan on going to find one today. X

LOL i have depression too but had champix and day 3 was free from the cigs :) champix did make me feel nauseous so stopped and took up an e cig to be told it wasn't acceptable either................ so i came home chucked it away and haven't looked back. As my surgeon said he wasn't prepared to give me a life saving op for me to smoke myself to death............ and i kinda agree :) Gl hunni x x x

I am going to use the electric to get me through the first few days and then hopefully all will be well. Thanks Hun xx

Day 1 and I actually hate it already. I mean surely the docs won't even know I still smoke? As long as I don't have one before going in.

Mmm.....not sure if I'm correct but I think there is a test that can be done to check smoking.
Has anyone else heard this?
That's why I stopped smoking and followed the preop as I was determined to get my bypass x
Good luck..

I'm just thinking out loud. I know there are ways and means via your oxygen etc for them to tell. Just struggling big time

I really struggled breathing after my op and imagine it would have been far worse had I been a heavy smoker.
Good Luck!
