Duodenal Switch my insides are very vocal

I've had a grumbling belly for a few days now, it hurts too like I have inflamation. I'm 3 years post op with the DS. I'm eating okay but it's really loud and strange?! Took painkillers earlier as it was so painful. Any ideas?

If you needed painkillers, I hope you went to the hospital & are feeling better.

Hi postop i'm having duodenal switch on 28th in Liverpool i realise you had it in America but is there any tips you can give me in anyway whatsoever as i believe experience is worth a lot , did you have many post op problems ?

I had mine London, it went well. Since that episode its all better again. Think it was a bug.

Happy to answer any questions.

Hi Angie,

It's somewhat different in the US, but also very much the same. I have several friends in the UK who've had it and most of us have had similar experiences.

Tell me, are you having it done in 1 part or in 2 parts?

I will PM you with the link to a profile I wrote. It will let you know how it went for me. Plus, I'll give you my email addy. You can ask me any questions you like and I can put you in touch with some UK DSers. I can also send you a packet of info. my surgeons & their DS nutritionists give out. It's tailored esp. for DSers. While some of the food may be different, you can get an idea of how much to eat, drink and what vits/minerals to take & when. It also gives you a chart with protein values which is helpful. A good rule of thumb with protein is that each oz. = 7 grams of protein. Since (eventually) you'll need to eat 80-120 grams/protein/day, this will help. Don't worry if it takes you quite a while to get there. It took me over 6 mos. to get to 50 grams/protein/day. I had to drink a protein shake each day for the 1st two years b/c I couldn't eat enough. That's not to say it'll be the same for you. Some people can eat much more quite early on. It's very individual.

What I want to urge you is to use the 'losing' window to its fullest. The DS gives you a large 'losing' window. Stay low sugar. Stay low carb. You can go back and add those when you lose the weight & want the weight loss to slow down & stabilize. But definitely use that window to its utmost.

Also, when postop...walk, walk, walk, & sip, sip, sip. Staying hydrated is much more impt. than eating protein the first month.

Best of luck.

Thanks that's very kind of you xx i think it sounds like just what i need i am trying my best to stick to the sheet from surgeon but it is very restrictive (i don't mean for sugary things or fatty ) just could do with knowing about things like sauces and varied menus :)am having it in one part xx

Sure, no problem.

Glad to hear it's in 1 stage. Sometimes people need to have it in 2 stages but when I saw your weight, I hoped they could do it in 1 for you.

If you want to email me (I think I gave you my email addy in a PM) I'll email (as an attachment) the documentation & whatever other info. you'd like. :)

i'm sorry to bother you but have been having reflux over last few nights and my tummy talking to itself for hours . i mentioned it to the dietitian from blackpool but she said i have to go to see mr kerrigan at liverpool where i had op, i wasnt really worried about it but they seem to be making more of it than i expected, i have ranitidine every morning and thought that was supposed to cover me 24 hrs. i suppose i am struggling to manage to eat 6 times a day but am drinking plenty of fluids including milky ovaltine to get protein and low fat yoghurt .

Ask if you can take something more than once a day. I took Pepsid (I think it was) a couple of times a day to prevent heartburn.

BTW, are you taking something like Urso to prevent gallbladder issues? Or had your gb been removed?

nothing for gallbladder they never even mentioned it, just have 1 multi chewable vitamin, 4 sachets of calcit3 2xtwice a day, 1 ranitadine and nothing else at the moment. i didn't manage to go to liverpool but it seems to have settled down now because i've propped my pillows up and am not sleeping so flat on my back :)

Glad to hear things are feeling better.

You might want to mention your gb (unless it's out) the next time you speak to them. Just to err on the cautious side. :)

i'm not sure if i'm getting a bit paranoid but seem to be worrying about things now , like my tummy talking to itself very noisily, i had the heartburn again last night and it actually woke me up, i'm so frightened it has leaked but have no idea what the symptoms would be. the swelling on my right side is still very sore but i know that's where the muscle damage is but on the left where they do the tummy it feels tight under my bust, i don't know if this is normal or if i should be worrying ...
sorry to be a nuisance but please let me know if you think i'm just worrying un neccessarily i'd feel much better then :)

Your stomach's talking is very normal. My surgeon told me this early on -- "Remember, you have brand new insides. You had 1 stomach & system for your entire life. Now you have a brand new one. You need to treat it as if it belonged to an infant."

The noises sometimes have another interesting side effect. Your brain is hearing different noises from your digestive system. It has to get used to them as well. So if you have any sleep issues you didn't have before or perhaps some vertigo (but this could be dehydration so you need to watch it) that might be why.

You're not overly anxious. You're in a heightened state, lol. It's normal. You've redone your insides. It takes time to take it all in. :)

Hi, I have a very vocal system as well and it isn't only after I've eaten. My insides gurgle and I have a lot of wind but thankfully no pain. If you have leaked it would have been immediately post op and been very, very painful so I don't think you have a problem there. Best wishes.
