Proton pump inhibitors; Omeprazole, lanzoprazole, especially for sleevers

Hi,

Whilst researching the different surgeries, I began to wonder about continued use of the anti-stomach acid tablets that people take, ie the PPI's omeprazole and lanzoprazole. Bypassers need to take them to stop acid pouring into the part of the gut that is not originally designed for containing acid. If they dont take them they get ulcers. Sleevers need to take them to prevent GERD. My question is this, do all sleevers take PPI's all the time??

Long term use of PPI's carry an increased risk of bone fractures, and reduce the absorption of B12. Stomach acid is needed to extract B12 from our food, and to break down protein. THIS is also why B12 shots are needed, not just because of malabsorption (bypassers), and why we need lots of protein. The acid isnt there to break it down effectively.

So, do all sleevers take PPI's ALL the time? And does anyone have any side effects? eg

  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea
  • Flatulence
  • Headaches
  • Nausea (feeling sick)
  • Abdominal (tummy) pain
  • Vomiting
Hard to say compared to the surgery i guess!!

Hi, well I am 4wks post op with the sleeve and I only have to take lanzoprazole for the first 3 months and then I can drop it for good.

Straight after my op I suffered bad with acid reflux esp when lying flat but has improved alot and I don't think it will be much of an issue by 3 months.

Oh and I have no side effects from it, and I can tell if I have missed it for a day and feel better on it.

I suffer from GERD, and have been on long term omeprazole for about 4 years now, If i dont taken them I end up vomiting up my stomach acid, and ending up in terrible pain.
I constantly have the dose tinkered about with 20mg then was up to 40mg then back down to 20mg and now I take 40/20 alternate days, or the vomiting and nausea starts.
Every drug has there risks and side effects.

Thats really good to hear Emma, thanks. It makes me want the sleeve over other ops :)

Sorry to hear about you GERD Minnie, did you have it before your band?

I am a bypasser & was on Lansoprazole pre op for gastritis. Post op they tried me on Fast tabs which were horrendous :( they made me soooo nauseous so I came off them at 2 weeks out & went back to Lansoprazole capsules. I have never had any of the symptoms you list. I have not been told if I will be able to come off them yet but even if I can't, I really don't mind as they do not affect me at all :) xxx

I have been on omeprazole 20mg capsules for years because I have GORD, but since my op I was taking fast tab lansoprazole but they make me feel very sick.I stopped taking them for a week but found the solvazinc also make me feel sick so decided to just live with it. The metformin used to make me feel sick too but haven't had those since surgery so used to the nausea feelings. I haven't been told how long I have to take them for though.

You could take your tablets in capsule form now, Marie :) that will take care of the nausea. Fast tabs & Souble Metformin are really bad for causing nausea :wave_cry: xx

Thanks Denise, its good to know about the fast tabs!! Yuk!! I think, as a bypasser, you'll be on PPI's indefinately.

Thanks Marie, dont stop taking a PPI without permission, i think you'll always need one, as a bypasser! Hope the sickness passes for you eventually:) GERD and GORD are the same thing i think.

I am a sleever and I have to take lanzaprole and Urdox for six month. (excuse the spelling and abbreviation). The Urdox is to prevent gall stone. Then after that just a multi vitamin in case I don't manage to get all from my diet.

Thanks Greyputy, again, thats what i wanted to know, whether sleevers need PPIs permanently or not. Obviously the answer is NOT!! Never heard of Urdox though! Off to look at it!

Thought I'd best get the real name for you.

It's Ursodeoxycholic acid tablet, it says on my notes surgery protocol. That's at Sunderland Royal.

Thanks Becky and Greyputty. Very useful information. I am also like you, Greyputty, from Sunderland Royal, a pre-oper. I am thinking of having a sleeve and I suffer a lot with gastritis. I am already on Lanzaprazole amd have been for years. I wonder if the operation will improve things in this area in the long term since we have to eat smaller portions and more often and obviously there will be less pressure on the stomach as we loose weight. Anyway, thanks for sharing this.

Hi am on lasoperazol and dont seem to do much - can i take anything better ?
