Anyone here taking Metformin? Need your advice please

its ok gaynor I dont mind Lol

I have been on metformin since my pre op assessment in december. Or should I say was on it up to having my op. Now though I can't get them down no matter how much I try and there is no way I can crush them. I saw my GP last week about this and I have to go back tomorrow to find how my sugar levels are doing and to find an alternative to the "horse pills" lol. must say though I never noticed any side effects from it before.

I was given liquid metformin for directly post-op, so it does come in liquid if that helps!

Nic:D

I was on this for 6 weeks and I didn`t like it at all :(

It made me feel and act as if I was drunk! (made a total arse of myself at works xmas do cos it looked like I got trollied!).

I also felt sicky and had headaches.

I hope it goes well for you,

LiSe x

I started to take it and this afternoon my heart beat was racing. I was very tired and felt like PMS.

Hi
I have polycystic ovaries and as a result i am insulin resistant. My specialist weight management team put me on metformin to help with the insulin problem with the aim of losing weight.
At first they made me really nauseus - so i lost a bit of weight in the first few weeks due to this, but gradually this got easier (i started to recognise which foods made this better or worse too)
They really helped reduce my sugar cravings and i started to find sweet foods a bit sickly - so it was really good for me in that respect and i was steadily losing weight.
Unfortunately for me they also regulated my cycle and i started having monthly periods (where normally i would have one every 12-18 months !!) and i suffer badly from PMT. I was also on another wl drug which made the depressive elements of the PMT worse and i got so low that i had to come of both drugs.
If it hadn't been for this i would still have been on the metformin as i think they really helped with the sugar pangs and helped me to lose weight.

Have you been started on it gradually? What dosage are you on?

Jayne: does the contravceptive pill help your pms? Cos if so you could go back on the Met.

Hi Farzu

I would be more concerned with the racing heart beats...you should get this checked out.

It probably is part of the side effects of these drugs but best be safer than sorry.

~hugs~

I think in non-diabetic women the metformin could cause the blood sugar to go too low maybe.

Hi, I took metrormin for about 3 years to treat PCOS (I'm not diabetic). I was told it would help me loose weight and control my symptoms but it didnt. I did not have any side effects/problems at all but also there was no positive outcome. My symptoms are the same and I have put on more weight. I have stopped taking metformin now as I dont see the point. I'm just waitng for surgery now.

I was on metformin a few years back and only lasted a month as the side effects were terrible, i couldn't sleep or i could do nothing but sleep, i had terrible stomach pains and ended up getting gastrointestinal upset and was sick for 3 days. I tried again last year but my body just won't accept it. My GP put me on it for PCOS and Weightloss but i told him it wouldn't work but he wanted me to be more persistent. I haven't been back since as he referred me at the same time so i've never used my repeat prescription either!!

I never felt any sickness because of diabetes before i started taking metformin but as i have very bad eating habits i am feeling very sick, tired and dizzy if i don't eat on time. This is really making me worried.

I've had no side affect with Metformin, though my mum has.

Do you take your tablets with of after food?

Have you been referred to a diabetes consultant/endocrinologist? They'll have more advice for you.:)
