So I'm on a bariatric ward and all four patients have had band removals and no replacements!
At least I'm in good company. Two of us have revised to bypass and the others will be free of restriction!

Oooo some of the stories in hearing !!!!

congrats on the revision now remember rest rest amnd more rest for a speedy recovery

Hi where did you have your band removed? Im in such pain and desperate now having had this band in for 4 years which has been a nightmare from day. Hardly eat without been sick, constant swollen stomach and never lose weight! I went to Belguin but scared about going again! Looking forward to a response ;(

Hi Penband

Why not start a new thread to introduce yourself Roccosmummy has had revision surgery, as have some other regular posters xx

As you've not had your surgery in the uk then your first step should be to talk to your gp about your ongoing struggle with the band. See If they will arrange a barium swallow x-ray at your local hospital with a bariatric department. If it's slipped or in the wrong position you may be referred to an NHS specialist for removal. Revision surgery may or may not be available depending on your personal weight issues etc. Some people have to apply for funding. I'm sure band removal is possible though on NHS if causing longterm problems to your health and wellbeing.

Failing that most surgeons perform revisions and removals if self funding!

Good luck

Hi Victoria..
Im waiting to have my band removed and revised to a bypass..
I had a swallow done to see if my original dilation of the
esophagus had righted itself...
Once the xrays were reviewed it became apparent that my band had actually slipped slightly which is whats been causing all my symptoms for the last 2 years.
I cant wait to get rid of it.. I had it done nearly 10 years ago and paid privately... I really wish I had just gone straight for sleeve/bypass..
Can I ask you where abouts you have had your revision?
Are you waiting for bypass or have they done it all in one go??

Tracey xx

Hey Tracey

We have very similar stories. I too was a long term 10 year bander. I had a slip which wasn't diagnosed for two years. It was repositioned but in the wrong place for the type of band. That was five years ago and it's been miserable.
I had it removed and revised to a bypass 6 weeks ago at St Richards Chichester by Chris Pring (streamline surgical)

I feel so relieved to be rid of that band. The bypass feels easier to live with but my weight loss is very slow compared to others. Perhaps because my BMI is at the lower end of the scale ?!?

hi Victoria..

we do have VERY similar stories don't we.. !!!

ive got the original Swedish band and it was ok for the first year or so but its not been very nice since... im not slating the surgeon at all I was just unlucky and made the wrong choice..

my weight is rising steadily cos im just eating rubbish due to every time I eat anything "healthy" it can make me so sick its put me off trying... the more I vomit now its slipped the more scar tissue im gonna end up with..

I was so lucky to get in on the NHS though for revision..

it was purely by chance I met my fiancée last year and he was a revised double bander!!! he took me along to meet his surgeon, who had revised his to a DS, they are great friends and I told him my story during the appointment and he said he would be delighted to take me on and told me how to get the referral sorted with my GP.... A thoroughly decent not to mention brilliant surgeon was offering me help when I didn't think I would ever get the band filled again....

you have to remember that at this point I had no idea the band had slipped!!! I had put the symptoms down to dilation as they are very similar..

I know now that when I went into hospital 18 months ago with severe ab pains, that was diagnosed as a blocked liver bile duct , was in fact due to my band slippage and the band had been blocking the duct ... it had caused a major infection which turned me very yellow and made me so ill I cant actually describe how dreadful I felt.

As soon as I mentioned this medical history at my own appointment with the bariatric team it was them that explained that it was the band slipping that had made me violently sick as it tends to affect the liver in this way ..

Because my local hospital have no bariatric unit they had no real idea of what the band can do when its being "naughty"...

I cant wait to get it out and get the bypass or sleeve.. (not 100% sure which way they are going to go yet) .. Ive got an appointment with the psychiatrist to assess my suitability for the surgery on the 10th march... just a formality that the NHS require as its irreversible ...

Judging from your info you had your revision done private?? or am I getting confused? lol

Im counting the days down cos im so desperate to get shot of the bloody thing now ...

What was your BMI when you had the bypass done? as I think that tends to affect the speed of weightloss if it was quite lowish...

Do you have any mobility problems?

Ive got really bad probs with my spine that ive had 2 ops for so I cant go gym or do anything other than walk for exercise... So that tends to affect loss too if your unable to get a sweat on a few times a week lol....

Its so nice to be able to talk to someone who is on the other side of revision that's got a very similar history to myself..

Thank you for taking the time to answer xxx

So similar. Symptoms, misdiagnosis and everything. I was being strangulated by my original 4mm Lapband and starved myself fat again. This was following a 7 stone loss, slippage and incorrect reposition. I used to wake up chocking on bile and vomiting was so intense it would projectile through my nose!!!
All this suffering and it made me fat!

Luckily I was handed over to a different surgeon within the Chichester team whilst being a private patient but experiencing many problems. As I'd become pregnant during these issues he thought best to referred me for NHS band aftercare so I was being looked after properly. After having baby and continuing weight gain and discomfort he did the tests required and compared them to previous x-rays which showed the band was incorrectly positioned 5 years ago!! Needless to say I was immediately booked for a revision and under the NHS.

BMI at time of revision was 37.2
Weight 16.13

No co morbities. Just fat and in discomfort and very low.

Yes it would seem weight loss is far slower if starting at the lower end of BMI. I do feel far more comfortable without that devilish band but the same worry is there with not wanting food to get stuck, dumping, choosing appropriate foods whilst not actually wanting to bother with food. It's never easy but so far I've no regrets. I might do if I can't shift the weight. It's dropping slowly and I need to be patient ! It been easy getting used to being bypassed as I've had 10 years band experience ;-p
Good candidates I'd say.

I have another 5.5 stone I want to lose (my perfect weight is 10 stone) I shall be having some plastics privately. I think that will be a harder recovery!

Hiya... Even our starting weight is nearly the same !!! im 16st 12lb this morning...

I was 15st 7lb the last time I saw my surgeon in Dec...

I was looking at your pics and our body shape is very similar too.... carry our weight from head to toe rather than just on our tummy etc...

ive never been in denial about how overweight I am... but even the surgeon that originally fitted my band re weighed me as he felt the weight that was logged by the nurse the day before was wrong lol.. so I tend to be heavier than I look ....

the surgeon did mention about putting in a new band but after my fiancée's problems with both of his I made it quite clear I was not putting myself through banding again.. he smiled and said "that's fine we can bypass you if you want" ... I could have kissed him lol.... I then asked did I need to apply for funding etc... and was amazed when he said no because its a revision surgery and If I gain back the weight (I was 21st 7lb at heaviest) my spinal problems will just get worse ...

I cant believe how meeting my fiancée has changed my life so much for the better... I felt like I was out in the failed band wilderness up until I went to his appointment with him...

How is your weight loss going Victoria?

You say its a bit slower than you would like..

May I ask you what your typical days food intake is now?

Sorry if im being a pest xx

Blimey even our reaction to our surgeons offer of a bypass was the same ;-) lols

Ok so my food intake prior to revision was very little compared to most adults of a normal weight. I was putting on weight the more I tried to kick start my metabolism following having my baby. I breast fed and started boot camp 3x per week intensive fitness training and still continued to gain plus my knees and Achilles became painful. On being told I was to have surgery in 2 months I relaxed about everything. Quit boot camp which sorted out my pains and my weight stabilised !

I started the 2 week preop milk diet on Jan 1st and lost 7lbs in fits and starts.

Surgery was on Jan 14th and I lost a further 7lbs in the first week. It took another 3 weeks to lose another 7lbs then 2 more weeks to lose 4lbs

Total loss in 8 weeks is 1st 11lbs which averages out at 3lbs per week.

My food intake varies. I progressed really quickly from slop to regular food in just 3 weeks with no problem. I just felt ready and physically fine and healed.
Yesterday food diary
B- skinny latte
L- 3 or 4 vegetable crisps, skinny cappuccino
S- mini sushi pack, 5oz half sugar del monte fruit juice
D- 3x forks of roast chicken, 4 steamed carrots, 1 broccoli floret.
S- mini blueberry muffin

Today
B- nothing
L- 1/2 of a small chicken fajita deli wrap, 5oz flat Pepsi max
D- will be Mexican turkey and rice chilli stir fry. I'll have about 2 heaped tablespoons and some low fat plain Greek yog with it.

I've no idea if this intake is normal. I really can't be bothered to eat but I feel really flat and sick sometimes so I know I have to have something. It's hard making good choices as I've lost my enjoyment of cooking so I tend to eat whatever I don't have to think about or make too much effort over!!!
I add a spoonful of marvel milk protein to my nespresso milk frother to boost protein intake. I also make a virgin mojito in the juicer every other day to boost iron.

I hope this helps!

Hi Roccomummy, thanks for your support. It seems cancer all around band top of stomach, spread to lymph nodes and found shadow on the liver. Going for another scan on liver tomorrow then get chemo treatment plan on Monday. Band removal Wed as I cant get fluids down or food losing a pound a day. Never thought I would be happy not losing weight! All I can say to everyone if youre been sick force your Dr to take notice and get them run tests dont mess around as its not worth possibly ending your life over trying to lose weight. Will keep in touch - positive attitude and power off pray ;)

Sounds like you're being well looked after and things are moving fast to give you the best possible chance to fight this. You sound like you're in fight mode which can only be a positive thing moving forward.

Good advice you give not to ignore sickness or band/post wls problems but it seems we all do for a time and gp's are pretty clueless where wls is concerned. I will say they're improving though.

Stay strong, keep focused, ask for support, here is a good place for that too.

What a wake up call for all us banded not to ignore all the sickness as we assume it's our bands causing it....

I'm so very sorry to hear the news was not the best but as Victoria says.. "Sounds like you're in fighting mode"

I really hope that the chemo plan you are given gives you the best results and your health improves ...

Please keep us posted as to how you're getting on ....

Kind regards tracey xxxx

Hi All had band removed much tougher than I imagined. Two weeks later still struggling to eat. Start chemo on Thursday 20th March. Dont ignore and speak up with Dr even if they against this surgery and get medication to elimate air bubbles/choking plus have yearly scans. Love to you all Pen x x

penband, I'm so sorry to hear what you're going through. I hope you manage to beat this and make a full recovery.

Is it oesophageal cancer?

I've got everything crossed for your treatment and wish you lots of love and all the very best xx

Hi
Very interesting thread I have been offered a band reposition on nhs due to pouch dilation
Band was fitted privately four years ago but they said I don't qualify for revision surgery as my bmi is under 40 now approx 35 any advice as I see a couple of you have managed to get this done on the NHS at a similar BMI
Thanks xx
