Bariatric Surgery Criteria Leeds

I was given this today by PALS in Leeds and as it is not on the BOSPA website I thought it may be of interest to some people on here.

The following criteria has been set by the Yorkshire and Humberside Specialised Commissioning Group for Specialised Adult Morbid Obesity Surgical Services. The criteria became active from 1st April 2009 under a 3 year agreement.

Bariatric surgery is recommended as a treatment option for people with obesity if all the following criteria are fulfilled:
• A BMI of 50kg/m2 or greater without related co-morbidity
• A BMI of 45kg/m2 or greater in the presence of a significant disease*which may be amendable to treatment if obesity is modified by surgery, and /or have
• A condition which requires surgery at the same time as bariatric surgery, based upon clinical need and urgency for such surgery such as cholecystectomy, hernia repair.
• A condition which needs surgery or complex technological intervention as soon as possible after bariatric, such as hip or knee replacements.
• A condition for which surgery is withheld until weight loss is achieved e.g. spinal pathology or awaiting IVF for infertility.
• A condition that although surgically treatable is at high risk of recurrence in the presence of obesity e.g. incisional hernia.

*Significant disease could include:
• Established cardiovascular disease
• Osteoarthritis
• Type 2 diabetes
• Sleep apnoea
• Severe hypertension
• History of ischaemic attacks or stroke
• Severe lower limb major joint disease requiring orthopaedic intervention, otherwise precluded on the basis of BMI
• Dyslipidaemia.

Be warned though, I fit the criteria but have been seen as inappropriate. I rang the relevant department and they said that if I am correct my Dr can write to them and I will be put forward but this has obviously delayed my case by about a month. ANNOYING!

Thank you, I tried to find that ... I live in Nottingham and have to go to Derby to see the Bariatric consultant. If you are referred for a gastric bypass you are transferred to Leeds. It gives me a better idea of what will be going on.
