Booked myself in the docs to have bloods done

louisaL

looking to make a change!
When i asked about wls on monday the doctor said i would need bloods and she would 'look into the rest', so the receptionist advised me to book myself in for it which i cant have until a week on monday

I'm worried my doctor doesnt know the application preceedure and is delaying time now, i spoke to pct today and they just said there is no right or wrong information to give just get an application form filled in by my doctor and put a 'case' together to present to them

is there anything i can do

it depends on your pct's critiria to how you fit and whether you have to do the tablets weight management thing or not or whether you qualify with co-morbids ect

just keep plodding on going back if you jump through the hoops so to speak it may make you journey easier

Someone will pop along from your neck of the woods to offer more area info soon i'm sure

Good luck and keep us posted

xx

thank you very much for replying! x

Hi Lou,this could be a long journey, waiting a week for test is nothing. Many of us have waited two years plus.I have only recently had funding aproved. Since july 2008 I have done weight management, drugs, sleep studies, dietician, phsyc, fitness classes, bloods tests and more tests. Some peeps go through quite quickly like 3/4 months. This depends on your pct.Take a deep breath and dont let it become the be all of your life like I did.It will get you down.

I agree, my life had been practically on hold for over a year! This is sooooooo not a quick journey lol. Hopefully it will be worth the wait though and I hope you have one of the PCTS's that seem a bit quicker. Good Luck X

All this is new to me this weight loss surgery as I very new into finding out information etc, when I enquired at my general practitioners about weight loss surgery I was not sent to have blood tests done, the doctor told me he would apply to the primary care trust to see about funding etc. So what tests (blood) is he doing on you? Rob

she said she 'thinks' they require bloods so i've booked myself in to the nurse to have them done a week monday.

i've decided to write everything down with dates etc about my recent diets, weights at what stage and how much i've put on since, to help with my case file.

i think it depends on the pct in your area as each area require different information but i rang my local pct and they just said present them with a case so i am lol

I totally agree with not putting your life on hold, i started my journey in feb 09 & hopefully will be having my op in september 10, its not a quick process & can eat away at you (no pun intended!),
i was the first person that my GP had put forward for surgery & they done bloods for me thinking they was saving time (bless!) but i had to have them done again anyway, best of luck with your journey, Em x

Hi Louisa, have you had a look at the BOSPA website for the criteria guidelines for your PCT?

Here's the link...

BOSPA - The British Obesity Surgery Patient Association

And the relevant guidelines for Bucks are...

BMI over 50 with diabetes or severe dismobility due to obesity sufficient to affect essential activities of daily living and who have been receiving treatment which has included diet and exercise support, pharmacological therapy and counselling in a specialist obesity management service and failed to respond adequately. Access to surgery is only via specialist obesity management service.

I seem to recall someone else on this site is under Bucks PCT too so hopefully they might see this thread and be able to offer you some more advice.

Good luck x

thank you.

i'm a bit worried now then, cause altho i'm 28st and a bmi over 60 i dont have diabetes or high bp, i can get around fine altho like most people i get out of breath doing simple walking around and going upstairs but it isnt stopping me doing every day living.

i have been on the cambridge diet though so i wonder if that is counted as a diet specialist.

If you book yourself in for blood tests then you need to know what tests the gp will be asking for. This is a very long journey sweetheart so you may need them testing again because our life style changes and so will the blood results. Good luckxxx

They mean a weight management clinic, usually at your local hospital.Where they monitor your past and present eating patterns, your bp,bloods, weight, exersize, psycological profile, your understanding of wls, coping methods. If you comfort eat you have to show you can cope not eating your stress away,ie doing something physical, working, volunteering. Some people turn to drink or drugs to cope with not being able to eat.

its not looking very good then i'm not very hopeful but will obviously do all i can to help this.
i dont comfort eat and never been offered to go to a weight management clinic

the receptionist at the doctors said the doctor should give the nurse details why the bloods need to be done.

Louisa they really wont say no with your BMI trust me they would be very stupid if they did especially as the NICE guidelines state you dont need co morbidities if over BMI 50. Please try not to worry (I know I said this the other day but clearly you are still worried, honestly I didnt even have to have tried pills because my bmi was over 50 x)

Louisa, when were you last tested for diabetes? Also have you read up on sleep apnoea to see if it sounds like you may have it?

I always urge people to have a up to date fasting blood test for diabetes, i had no symptoms when it was discovered i had it... That's after going through two pregnancies weighing 21stone.....

The more you can get checked out the better, if you're tested its one less hurdle to go through xx

I was checked for all sorts of things anyway once referred, so Im sure you will be too. Youve tried lots of diets and pills so you have done everything they would want you to have x
