Costs of surgery?

Can I ask a personal question? I have been waiting nearly a month now since I saw my GP to ask for referral and still have no news of appointment. I am tired of waiting already and have not even got over the first hurdle!! So impatient! I just wondered could anyone advise what sort of costs are involved in going private? Thank you :)

Whether you get an appointment or not will depend on the criteria you primary care trust apply - but a month is not long if you chose to take the NHS route.

Costs of private depend on what procedure you are looking for. I paid £5950 for a band with 3 years of unlimited fills and defills. I think my provider charges £10k plus for a bypass.

I have been quoted between £8500-£12000 for a private bypass.

As Mazza said 1 month is a very short time to wait on NHS. BUT waiting does give you time to research your options and get yourself ready for the op.
Its an emotional journey and I know my referral to surgery journey was short ( just under a year ) I had read up researched as much as I could, thought about what would happen during surgery and after. Thinking about how my family would cope etc. Im nearly 2 weeks out of surgery and I have to say I was prepared but somethings still hit you and you dont realise.
You dont realise how much you have to rely on others, what your limitations are.

Please dont rush into this, its a massive life commitment. Im not trying to preach I just want you to be aware that no matter how much you research it still comes as a shock at some level.
Its hard to say to someone dont rush, and your probably thinking that Im only saying it as Im post op. But Im new to the post op and the pre op waiting is still very fresh in my mind :)

Hope I didnt offend :D

i understand completly hun. I was so lucky with my PCT i only waited 4 months from initial GP appointment to surgery. but waiting for the PCT to agree funding took 3 weeks and that nearly killed me! i must be the most impatient person in the world! lol
I (and others on here) phoned the PCT and asked to speak to the person responsible for agreeing bariatric funding. They were very good, happy to speak to me and as soon as a decision was made, called me to let me know.

Thanks for the info, that gives me an idea to go on.

I completely understand what you are saying Elffie, it is a major decision and not to be taken lightly and it is scary, but I feel I have run out of other options and it is scarier to know I could still be this size in another ten years!

Wow Julia that was quick for surgery, I am very impatient like you but I doubt my turn around will be that quick (thats if I get approved in the first place!).

yeah I can imagine hun, I was the same. I threw myself into other things while I waited but I knew more than my GP so Im sure I would still be waiting if I hadnt of known.
Have you tried ringing your PALS at your PCT and asking them to help you find out? They can put you through to the right dept eg, Surgeons secretary and she might be able to help. I did that and found out that there was a 6 month waiting list before the 1st appt, unfortunatley private wasnt an option so I just had to wait.
Might be worth a try before you splash out :)

It was with The Weight Loss Surgery Group. I had to travel to preston to get that price. Price went up in July to £6195.

They do fills in Belfast too.

From my first discussion with my GP and the Diabetic specialist who referred me to surgery was just under a year. Waiting is a pain but if you can hang on and get it on the NHS it will be worth it mate.

Hi Sappho, I paid £5,500 with the Hospital Grp. If you have a BMI under 45, it is £4,950. This is a basic package and I have to pay for my own fills. I am very happy with the the care I received.

Thank you! I am soooo impatient.....

I paid £9995 for Gastric Bypass with Weight Loss Surgery Group, including 2 years aftercare.
