I have today received a letter from NGH saying that my blood count is slightly abnormal and they need a repeat blood count. The letter says the results need to return to normal before they can proceed with Surgery

I had the start of a cough when i went for pre op and i have been taking cough medicines to try and get rid of it. Had it about a month now. My coughs seem to last anything from 3-6 months but every time i go to docs over the years all tests come back clear. Has anyone else had this and would they just keep re testing until cough clears or is this re test at end of month the one and only chance i have as i have got this far and don't want to be refused now just because of a cough. :(

I suppose the only people who can answer you that truthfully would be your surgical team. Fingers crossed all is well for you next test. xx

Hi

A cough that lasts 3 to 6 months is not just a cough and needs more investigation, it does sound more like an alogy than anything too serious though, have all your past investigations just been via your GP or have you seen a respiratory specialist.

sorry...

sorry about that, I wonder if they are just saying that...have you actually gotten the results? I would make sure that the levels fall out of normal range for yourself. Take care and keep positive.

Ive had chest X-rays in the past and all come back clear n GP always ends up saying he doesn't know so I've left it past couple of times.

That's bad news but I guess the medical team just want you to be fitting fit before your op because it is a very traumatic surgery so I assume that they don't want to take any chances. I know you must be disappointed but they have your best interests at heart ;)

Undergoing major surgery makes patients more prone to infections - an open wound means that all kinds of wee bugs can get straight into your bloodstream. When that happens a comparatively mild 'bug' can become much more problematic. They will no doubt want to test for an underlying condition that might not have been spotted before.

I know you are very disappointed at the delay but it is absolutely for the best that they rule out in advance the presence of any bacterial agent or virus that might, just might affect you post-surgery. Better safe than sorry!

Chin up, and fingers crossed, you'll soon be cleared for the op x

I understand how you must feel but it is just one off the stages to getting surgery but I understand now dr ackroyd want us in best health before anaesthetic as a abnormal blood count can cause problems after surgery
Good luck and hope it gets sorted quickly
Mark
