Drinking with meals

Hi all,
Just wanted to ask, I've read in my providers book not to drink an hour before and after food (I'm two weeks post op) and a few people explained why that is, but is that just for now or forever? I'm really struggling with that as I feel I need a drink just after eating. But I'm trying to do as I'm told :) Anyway my question is how do you manage that when you go out for a meal? I'm thinking I can hide the fact I've had a band now when I go out for meals (this is a part of my job, socialising on a nit with colleagues when away from home) but don't know how I will get round not ordering a drink with my meal if that makes sense?
Didn't know if that advice was just for the first few months.
Thanks x

Yes its forever, it takes a while to get used to but eventualy it becomes second nature.

If you drink during you could either flush the food through or cause it to back up - not nice.

If you are out all night the hour will soon pass xx

You need to allow at least 30 minutes after a meal before having a drink to allow your body to absorb all the nutruints and vitamins in your food.... as maryanne has said ifyou drink straight after you will flush the food through too quick.. or you will be sick... this could lead to malnutrician. Ive had a bypass and that definately applies to bypassers... im guessing its the same or simular for a bander xx

Its exactly like Mazza says. For banders, we still absorb nutrients however, so it's not the same as bypasses/sleevers. I sometimes have a wee drink when I am out as it takes the pressure off when I am dining out with strangers in particular. A few tiny sips during your meal is probably not going to be the end of the world, but if you drink in large volume it may be different. I stick to thirty minutes before and after meals rule generally as discussed with my surgeon and that seems to be ok for me. Speak to your dietician / surgeon if you want clarification or to deviate from your providers guidance.

I know my guidance booklet said no fizzy drinks, but when I spoke to my surgeon, he said the 'odd' glass of champagne in moderation was fine ... Confusing / contradictory or what

I'm 7 months in and I'm totally used to it. I couldn't face a drink until after 30 mins after a meal anyways as I'm too full! And I find i don't drink before going out with friends and family as that fills me up too.
If i go out for a meal with people i don't know i get a drink but just takes sips. No one picks up on the drinking but people have picked up on how little and slowly I eat!! That will be the thing to overcome x
You will get used to it, it just becomes second nature. :)

Thanks, I haven't told anyone from work and we all stay at hotels together and go for a meal on the evening, there is only so many times I could cry off or eat a small meal, they've been used to seeing me polish off all my food! I might need to take advice from my goddaughter on how to hide food! She didn't like the skins on her new potatoes so was slyly putting them inside her Vimto bottle! We didn't even notice. I just don't want to have to be questioned. I'm back to proper work tomorrow and already wondering how I will get passed the lunch situation.

I was terrible for this pre band, drinking b4, during and str8 after a meal and that was the one thing I thought I would have trouble with, but with the band I was too scared to drink and now to think of it tbh It would be impossible for me to drink that soon after a meal without wasting the meal ( if u get my gist) - You will adapt real quick x x

Its something that I struggle with. I had the sleeve. I keep reminding myself to check the clock as soon as I finish eating so that I can countdown the 30 mine til my next sip. Hopefully I will get used to it soon :)

I hope so too. I've just spent the last hour parched counting down for a drink. I'm only two weeks post op so I have to wait an hour at the minute. I think. Maybe I should read my booklet again! X

I remember counting! It will come where 30 mins is far too soon after and this time of counting and hunger pangs will be well in the past :)

Sorry mazza from me too ... Predictive text. At least I gave you something with nice bodywork LOL X
