Gastric Band and pregnancy

River

New Member
One of the main reasons i want a gastric band is because of difficulty getting pregnant because of my weight.
Ive explored all aspects of the gastric band but this is the one question i still have not been able to answer and thats does the gastric band surgery effect you from having children ? and what happens when you do get pregnant ? Id love to hear from anyone to put my mind at rest

Hello River,
I haven't had surgery yet but i've the same cause as yours. I'm seeing a fertility specialist for last 1 and half years and asked him about WSL. he said there is some risk in every pregnancy but when you are fit and healthy the risk factors are very less than when you are over weight. So many people got pregnant after the surgery and had beautiful healthy babies. As i'm going for bypass i have researched a lot on this topic. I had my first appointment with Dr coppack yesterday and at first he asked me to speak with my fertility specialist and then think twice about the surgery but when he saw the letter from my fertility doctor saying that i have already discussed it with him and he agrees that the combined stratigies will help my BMI get lower and start treatment , there was no more questions. In case of band i think it will be De-filled when you are pregnant (read it some where in this forum). I have gatheered some information about it. its about 12 pages in MSword from different websites. if you send me your e-mail address i will e-mail it to you. I wish you all the best.

i was banded because i had no fertility i was told by my surgeon that once you have lost the right weight[depending if there are other fertility issues] there is no reason not to become pregnant, when u are the band is emptyed for duration of pregnancy then filled again after, iv lost 7 st in the year since op my ovulation has returned recently i now have normal hormones im having a scan in next few weeks to check my ovarys out:) you should wait a year after op befor trying tho as you need the year to firstly loose weight and secondly make sure you are mentally in plae that when band is emptyed you dont go food mad

Ah thats great thanks for the responses guys :)

I went to see a specialist because i hadnt had periods for 8 months and basicly got told everything was fine but im carrying too much weight. So hopefully everythings ok because a previous doctor has told me the cancer i had as a child might make me encounter fertility problems.

farzu, i tried to message my email but because im a newbie it wont let me :( xx

hi im in the same situation
the main reason im having the band is to help my fertility
i havent bothered with my gp referring me to gyne till ive lost weight, because i no thats the root to my infertility!
after i have te band im 'not trying no protecting' as they say...will have to see what happens!

Hi , in my booklets it mentions having band defilled if you get pregnant, and going back for fills after breast feeding commences.

Sorry for the mass spam of replys, anyone know how to delete them ? i think my account was being verified so it wouldnt let me post and when i did well :p.

Thanks everyone for your kind replies makes me feel so much better about my situation knowing that im not the only one and some of you have come out better after the band. Im kinda afraid to say one of my main reasons for the band is to get pregnant and have a healthy pregnancy (because of my cancer as a child id have to have heart scans throughout the pregnancy) unless they wont give it to me but fingers crossed and wish me luck for wednesday ! xx

Best of luck to you both, sure every thing will go well with the miracle of life once the body is near goal weight .Mia

Hi River,
I have also done all the tests needed to check if i have any other problems that stopping me from getting pregnant like blood, Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) and internal ultrasound. My hubby also had his bloods done an semen analysis done but all the reports were normal. The only problem is the weight. I don't Ovulate regularly. I'm on Metformin at the moment as i also have diabetes but it also helps for PCOS.
My Dr told me that after the WLS you have to wait for atleast 12 to 18 months before you try for a baby as you will need to recover and loose weight properly. I'm happily willing to wait for that long and know i can have a baby as i have already waited for last 4 years and wasn't even sure if i can become pregnant. I have sent you a friends request.
