Just seen an article with Dr Hilary on GMTV. There was a short interview with the top NHS guy who said long term bariatric surgery saves money. the Dr H agreed , but with the next breath he said the NHS should be ruthless with this surgery and they should be looking at stopping people putting on the weight. He finished by saying this suregry took money from patients who needed life saving drugs. It was a bit of a mixed message.
I have been overweight since i was 12 and dieted throughout my life clearly without long term success. So the whole thing about stopping putting the weight on was irrelevant really and if i could do it another way and keep it off then clearly i would. Prepare for more "fat bashing"!

It was a more positive discussion with Shaw Somers on BBC Breakfast and he spoke so well for us all!

I think Hilary sits on the fence, I usually find that when he says his bit, he will normally go on both sides.... I'm with Shaw Somers...he showed a great depth of understanding! I was proud of Shaw.

im actually feeling abit over this, it makes me feel terrible when they say ooo but it takes money from cancer patients i dont really know what to say about it to be honest.......im slightly panicking i wont get op as its coming under huge scruntanity in the press so maybe it might change by the time my turn comes... who knows xx

It's made me feel a bit down too. Not just because wls is being pitched against life saving cancer drugs but just because it seems like people think it's the easy way out and i don't believe (reading on here and doing my own research) that it is!

It shows the ignorance of people & the mis-information fed to them by the media.

What about the money the NHS throws at drug addicts & alcoholics? I know this from personal experience as I had/have many alcoholics in my family!!! They are offered continuous help as are drug addicts, instead of fat bashing they should look other areas where the NHS throw money away.

What about immigrants? I know I'm opening a can of worms mentioning them & I am far from racist as I have two kids of mixed race!! But there are many, many areas where the NHS is open to scrutiny & I'm sick of it always been us that get a bashing!!

We don't go to our GP's on week 1 then get our op's week 2!! Its long, long journey & not the easy option & we often have to jump thru burning hoops to get to the surgery stage!!

Sorry, rant over!! I'll retreat to my slimfast.....

This whole story breaking is to do with governmental issues.

I really get annoyed when they say "x" is taking up resources from "y".

Basically any one of us here on this forum, with or without the surgery could get cancer and need treatment for that.

So in a way they are saying that if you are fat and have a surgery gratis on the NHS you won't be deserving of cancer treatments or any other type of treatments as you have already had your quota of the budget.

That is total and utter men's bits.

People with cancer have been denied life saving treatments for ages, it's not a new thing.

I know the NHS is strapped for cash, I know their nurses and doctors and surgeons are over worked but I also know that government hold the purse strings and it is them that make the NHS a difficult place to work in for these people.

But to stop giving these "life saving" operations, to help people who have come to the end of the line with their weight issues is just madness. And they know that a person with a lifetime obesity problem will also cost money. I think the money is better spent stopping the problem by an operation rather than let it continue and a real person, with feelings and emotions be helped back to health.

Just like anyone with any illness.

We deserve a chance too...

I've just looked and i hope yours is one of the ones i recommended.

People forget that NICE don't make recommendations based on how much is spent by the NHS but on the cost of each individual drug or procedure and whether it's value for money. Government make the budgets and the PCTs decide what they can or can't be spent on..hence the potcode lottery. My Mum's had cancer twice (once when she was just 16) and was a smoker and has free prescriptions because of a medical condition. My dad has high blood pressure and high cholesterol and pays for his prescriptions. My family history says that coupled with my weight (which IS my own fault) means if i don't have help i'm going to need help form the NHS so the £11k might just be cheaper in the long run.

If the NHS wants to save money they should get rid of their excess management and put the money into nursing staff...

Where is the person complaining about treatment for the drug addicts...that costs more - and they don't even contribute cash to the pot. Someone mentioned liposuction - do you think thats what weight loss surgery is?If so please go educate yourself.I had a gastric band fitted on the NHS - I have paid tax and NI all my life working since I was 16 I'm sure I've paid enough to cover it. Its not a magic pill its a fabulous tool and now the NHS don't have to supply me with diabetic medicine and pain relief.They also won't have to save my life when I drop from a heart attack or provide chemotherapy when I develop obesity related cancer. If I had will power as one person mentioned I wouldn't have needed help. I have never had a fast food diet so again...pathetic stereotype.
I wear my band with pride. 'FAT' comments-last socially acceptable prejudice.

I had investigative surgery last year for suspected endometrial cancer. Fortunately I was clear, but the consultant told me that my weight could well have had something to do with it and would present a continuing risk unless I lost weight. She recommended bariatric surgery. So apart from all the general health benefits, I am reducing my risk of getting cancer and the need for further expensive treatment on the NHS.

hmm I didn't see the debate, but can say that I totally agree with the sentiments on this thread...

If I carry on without bariatric surgery on the NHS I will still need lifelong treatment for long term conditions such as diabetes, including medication, annual foot checks, eye checks, blood tests; high blood pressure; high cholesterol; depression; underactive thyroid - all of which are LIFE THREATENING! Given my family history, I will probably also need hospitalisation and rehabilitation on the NHS for treatment of stroke, cancer, pulmonary thrombosis, heart attack. I will probably end up on an NHS ICU ward for treatment of multi-organ failure (like my dad) for five-six weeks until I cease to be a drain on the NHS purse. Lovely! I will also need state welfare (whatever form it will be by then!) as I will be too ill/disabled to work.

At the moment, I contribute to society and to the economy as I pay taxes, and have always been in employment since leaving school 20+ years ago.

I could try living on gin and cigarettes, this could help me lose weight without costing the NHS a bean! However, if I were to go down that route I would probably need NHS treatment for substance misuse, mental health and related cancers. I imagine that there would be less of a fuss made by the ignorant short-sighted Joe Public for this type of treatment than for bariatric surgery.
