hi, i have battled with my weight all of my life, have yo yo dieted but never been able to keep the weight off. i have tried every single diet going and just nothing seems to work on the long haul. the last time went to my drs, he discovered that my weight issues are the main cause of my long-term depression. my doctor looked into surgery via the net at my appointment and he stated that i was nowhere near the weight i should be to be considered for surgery but since then having been on here i know that this is not true at all. the dr said i was to eat healthily and try and lose some weight, i am due back again this friday. i would like some advice on what to say to my dr and for him to take me serious with regards to a gastric bypass, i am so down and some days i just dont want to leave the house at all as i feel like a blob and i think i have put some more weight on since my last appointment. vixxx

Hi Vixx, do you know your BMI? Or if not, if you post your height and weight we can help you work it out. Second step, which PCT are you under?

thank you shell and kate. i have tried to edit my profile to put the correct details in on my height and weight bu it will not let me at the moment. i am 160cm think thats about 5 ft 6/7 and weight is 293 lbs.
shell what do you mean by pct? do that mean private doctors? as i meant my local nhs doctor xx

thank you very much for the welcome allie. hi rose i live in sheffield south yorkshire xx

Your BMI calculates at 51.5, which under NICE guidelines means surgery should be offered as a first line option, ie you shouldn't need to have tried all other measures before being offered it.

Your PCT is you Primary Care Trust, so its the NHS trust that you live under. They all have their own criteria, but with a BMI of 50+ you should meet the criteria pretty much anywhere.

Have a read of this thread http://www.minimins.com/surgical-weight-loss/66792-nhs-funding-surgery-where-start.html it gives you lots of info on NHS funding and criteria, and where to find all the guidelines.

When you go to your GP, quote that NICE guidelines state that Bariatric surgery should be offered as a first line option as your BMI is over 50, and ask him to refer you along the PCT pathway for bariatric surgery.

hi Vixxx welcome to minis.
I took my NICE criteria along to my gp appointment, along with a list of ailments eg, sore knees, cant walk far etc. I also wrote down any diets pills etc I had tried. I had the ammo and there was no way she was going to say no.
Each PCT is different in the way they run the referral process, so I cant say for sure what will happen.
Just go in there armed to the eyeballs, and if he says no again ask him why, you fit into the criteria as Shell has said so find out his reasonings.
good luck today :D

Hi
Good luck for today
I am sure that when he realises that you have done your homework he will consider your side.
All dr's know diets do not work, it is "quite" easy to lose weight and each and everyone on here will give you excellent diets for a "quick fix" however the weight loss cannot be maintained due to unrealistic diets.
I wish you the best of luck xxx

Good luck at the GP's today...You have had some fantastic advice from all the above and Shell has given your stats to take in with you too...Don't forget to take those NICE guidelines and show him...Many GP's have never referred anyone for weight loss surgery before so the more info you have the more he/she will have to work with.

Once again good luck and all the best....Don't forget to let us know how you got on today.

(((hugs)))

hi everyone again, so sorry i didn't update after my doctors appointment last friday. Basically what happened was at my drs appointment prior to last friday appointment was that my gp had told me i had a height of 160cm but in fact he had documented my height as being169.5cm so he did my height again and i was 169.5cm and he worked m bmi a being 45.1 going on the basis that last friday on his scales i weighed 129kg. So i wasn't a happy bunny, although i went in there with proof regarding the NICE guidelines i didnt get the result i wanted. The doctor stated that as there is only one specialist in sheffield doing these operations Dr Ackroyd (see Gaynors post above) that if i wast undergo surgery then my bmi would have to be 50+. my doctor prescribed me xenical (orlistat) even though i have had them everal times before he said its just to show you have tried every other option and to keep a check on me.
anyway all i seemed to have done since i had this news is eat, eat and eat, i can tell the xenical are not going to work again but i am so fed up of food.
sorry i didnt come on here sooner i have just been so down about this whole thing.

Hi vixxx

I don't know what the BMI for WLS should be for Sheffield PCT...I did try to find it for you though.

I know there have been many here at Mini's who have had their operations with Mr Ackroid so they will be in a better position to advice you.

Good luck...(don't give up)

Hi VIXXX,
Have you had a look on the BOSPA Website - it might help you to find the criteria for your PCT.
Is there another doctor at your surgery you could go and see, who might be a bit more helpful?
When I first approached my doctor in July, last year, he completely dismissed my request to be referred. I was on Xenical (and still am), but it doesn't work for me (only really any good if you stick to 3 meals a day). He said "that's all there is - you have to cut down".
I went home and tried to forget it - but couldnt. I did loads of research and plucked up the courage to go back in December, but I asked to see a different doctor. The one I saw was much more sympathetic and he agreed to refer me.
I haven't had my op, yet, but my funding has been agreed and it's only a matter of time.
If you do fall outside of the criteria for your PCT is there a possibility of you going down the private route?
Good luck xx
