Hi everyone, i have been referred for WLS and have a BMI of 37 also heart disease albeit mild. (had heart attack aged 41). My friend has had her consultation today and been approved, she has opted for the band, she has BMI 45.
went she went there were 8 peole there all with BMI between 40/50. i am worried that they wont do it as BMI may not be high enough as this is what my friend has said. However, i have 100% support from my GP hence has anyone had the experience of GP saying yes and PCT saying no or do they always go along with what the GP recommends.;)
thanks x

Hello there

There are cases where the gp has referred and pct says no.....at the end of the day either the pct or surgeon can refuse wls for not meeting the criteria.

I had a look on the Bospa site and they are awaiting further info from Blackpool PCT. But If they follow NICE guidelines and criteria you have comorbidities so you fall into the section in bold

1.1.1.1 Bariatric surgery is recommended as a treatment option for people with obesity if all of the following criteria are fulfilled:
· they have a BMI of 40 kg/m2 or more, or between 35 kg/m2 and 40 kg/m2 and other significant disease (for example, type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure) that could be improved if they lost weight
· all appropriate non-surgical measures have been tried but have failed to achieve or maintain adequate, clinically beneficial weight loss for at least 6 months
· the person has been receiving or will receive intensive management in a specialist obesity service
· the person is generally fit for anaesthesia and surgery
· the person commits to the need for long-term follow-up.

If you phone your pct and ask for the person responsible for bariatric commissioning they should be able to tell you exactly what their criteria is x x x x x
