Gym Members?

Thinking about joining my local LA Fitness Centre.

Any other by-passers here who are gym members? or who have experience of LA Fitness?

Oh don't get me started! Before my crash and subsequent weight gain & injuries, I was addicted to exercise, tended to use the local council gyms though TBH. I boxed for years then progressed onto kick-boxing - and i was good too! Would love to have a go at cage fighting but I can barely cock my leg over the bath anymore letalone high kick!

LA has a very strict payment policy & cancellation - I have had some friends got into a bit of trouble with them over cancellations but their equipment is much of a muchness with other private gyms. I never went to them as I did not have 'the look' having dreadlocks for years, tats & piercings I just felt more comfortable in either the council ones or my training gyms.

Best of luck on your exercise quest though!

i use my local council one they allow me to suspend my membership over the school holidays when i cant get there and are really reasonable. classes are good fun and i have a choice of 8 centres.
would never do private ones as i would end up having to pay for periods when i physically cant get there beccause of children being at home and there creche cant manage them.

David Lloyd and Virgin are good as they do monthly member ship with a months notice so you are ot committed for a year.

I use Esporta and I like them and their equipment is top notch. I didn't like the cancellation policy though and committing myself to an entire year.

I use a Local Holiday park gym, They have everything including Gym, Swimming pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna, and I pay £35 for 10 sessions, can go in from 9am till 9pm, Its great because you can go whenever you like in what ever time scale you want and after 10 sessions just buy another 10 sessions.

I use the Exercise Prescription project and get a ersonal trainer for a pound. Before that I used JJB sports which was brill. I only used the pool but got paranoid becasue of my size and there were ALWAYS young men in groups in the jacuzzi and they ALWAYS would discuss the merits of the female swimmers as we went in. You can cancel at anytime.

Me and OH were looking at the local gym which has a pool for anyone's use but it's not a council one! They offered me 15% discount as i work for one of the companies they give discount too (NHS) and allowed me to use it for my partner too. Think it's going to work out at about £58 a month and we can sign for 3 months at a time.

My reason for joining is to get my fitness up before the big day, and then when i've recuperated to use it for weight loss and to help the muscle stay as muscle and not be eaten all up...

Good luck with it Karlos, i somehow get the idea you succeed at most things you set your heart on so it should go well xx

I go to virgin active. I love it there. I have been a member a couple of years now and they are so good I get time with a personal trainer every 8 weeks to change my exercise routine. I told them i was having surgery and they asked if I wanted to just suspend my membership for a month as I would not be using it for a bit till i fully recovered so i have not had to pay for that.

Anyway good luck starting at the gym, and make sure it is one you feel comfortable going to and spending time in and that is not too far from home or you end up not being bothered to go!!!

Hi not a bypasser but we (me OH and daughter) are members of our local Esporta gym. Fantastic facilities plus get a discounted corporate membership.

We were members of another Esporta, same county different town which was taken over by Virgin. Was never the same then plus they charged for my daughter who was only a toddler at the time.

Shop around and look out for hidden costs like joining fees, the memberships which have an opt out are sometimes a bit more expensive than the tied in for a year ones.

Hi Karlos - Me and Nic are going to go to Esporta at the Lowry (the ones who were there at the support meeting) so I shall let you know how we get on price wise! x

Thanks guys for your help. I have been quoted a great price by both LA fitness and Total. LA is on my doorstep really so I am minded that way. I'll let you know how I get on.

i go to my local gym, it's a private members' gym, predominently tennis and squash, but does have a fantastic ''lifestyle'' area, incorporating all the gear you'd expect from a mainstream gym, also has a sauna, sadly no steam room or pool, but i can live with that, i pay £20 per month off peak 0730 - 1800, as i'm a cabbie, time means nowt to me really in the working day

I am now a member of Virgin Active and love it! The facilities are wonderful and there is always access to a trainer if needed. Not to mention the steam room, sauna, jacuzzi etc etc! I have signed up for a 12 month contract as this is defnitely at least a 12 month project!
I should imagine that most national chains are similar in the deals they offer, Virgin is just round the corner from me so that was how I made the choice too!
I hope you enjoy your gym time as much as I do... Am off there shortly!

Lx
