Hi everyone. I am new to this forum and delighted to have found you all. I had a gastric band in November 2009 but I am one of those rare people for whom it just will not work. My surgeon is going to replace my band with a Gastric Bypass on 12th September. Looking to give and receive support and get to know you all a little better :)

hi Josie! what a fantastic birthday pressy! I'm sure the bypass will be your answer. x

Hi there! Welcome to the site! I hope that you can make this your new home as i have done lol. Everyone here is awesome and you get pretty quick responses. In my group meetings i have met alot of women that had the band originally and have had to get it replaced with another surgery. So don't feel like your an odd one. :) From what i have seen it happens quite often. I love my new tummy from the gastric bypass! Im sure you will be very happy with yours as well! Good Luck.

Thank you all so much for your lovely welcome. I have been reading all the inspirational posts on here and getting such a lot of fantastic advice. There is such a wealth of experiance and knowledge here it will take me weeks to read it all I expect. Just want to thank each and every one of you for being here and getting all this information on here for newbies like myself to learn. I hope that I too will be able to offer help and support to someone myself soon :)

I certainly will do that as it is comforting to know that someone else has been through the same thing. You are a fantastic bunch of people, so kind and helpful and because we are all in the same boat there is nobody to judge or criticise because we all understand what it is like. A truly inspirational site, I just wish I had discovered you all a lot sooner :)

Thank you all so much for your kind words of welcome. I already feel at home here and am learning so much. Not long to go now. My feelings are difficult to explain, when I think that a week today I will probably have had my bypass I feel a tingling of excitement, a little tingle of fear and yes just cannot believe that it is really going to happen. Strange or what :) I have to say, hand on heart, that I am not a bit worried about the operation itself. Having had many surgeries I know that I am in safe hands. My surgeon Mr Baker has been a pioneer in weight loss surgery in Australia and New Zealand and has been practicing here for many years. He is a specialist with laprascopic surgery and teaches others. So on that score I am not worried. I think the only thing I am worried about, if I am honest, is the woozy feeling when you sit up for the first time after anaesthetic. Wimpy I know but that is just me, I absolutely hate it. I can stand pain but never could stand feeling sick so am worried that so many people say that they feel sick and heave after the surgery. However, I sound as if I am nitpicking here so am going to stop now. I am just so grateful that I have this fantastic opportunity of living the rest of my life healthier and happier and slimmer. And starting life anew on my 62nd birthday.

Good luck to all of you on your weight loss journey. Hope it is a smooth ride for us all :)

Hi. I am also one of those peeps where a gastric band has not worked. I am also due to have my bypass done on 12/09/11. The thing is I am terrified. I am considering backing out. I know I have to do this as I am a diabetic weighing 18 st. I know if it works, I could get rid of the diabetes. This is so final. It will be nothing like the band. I am feeling negative as I have had no support as I have had to go private! Good kuck to you.

Hi Sarah :) It is so nice to know that we will be having the bypass on the same day and that we are in the same boat. It is perfectly understandable to feel the way you do and I expect we all feel like that from time to time pre-op. I just keep telling myself that this time it is all going to work. I went private for my band and, at the time it was the only option I could afford but I SO wish I had borrowed the extra two thousand and gone ahead with the bypass at the time.:sigh: It would have all be over and done with and I would prolly be nice and slim now.

However, I am putting things right now, thanks to an inheritance (thank you Auntie Rosalie), and although this surgery is a bit more invasive I am not going to feel it as I will be asleep and the recovery seems to be just a wee bit longer than the band.

I had big concerns and told my surgeon about them. I was worried about being too old and he laughed and told me that I was, in fact, one of his younger patients  He also informed me that the surgery would be a lot simpler and safer because I was slimmer this time and as I seemed to have no problems with anaesthetic he was not concerned about me undergoing surgery again. He said that my diabetes would probably go right into remission as soon as I had the bypass and my arthritis, arteriosclarosis (sp?) and angina would all improve dramatically.

Come on sweetheart, chin up. You can do this and you know that we will both be so pleased that we did next Tuesday morning. We can buddy up and compare notes on our progress and help each other out. As someone said in a previous post - the whole bariatric surgery team are totally used to operating on large people and they wouldn't operate on you at all if they thought you might be at risk.

Hi ya girls just Been reading your posts and wanted to just tell you both that I had my surgery 24 august 2011 and have just passed the 2 weeks from my surgery. I would like to say that I can reassure you it's the best thing I've ever done. Yes there are worries, and believe me I had them and most of my family and friends where dead against me having it done. But I have health issues and for the first time in my life thought I have to do something for me and I managed to do it. I would like to say if you have surgery the same day make ur experience in to a bonding with each other and share your experiences. I met the most lovely caring friend I know (poo bear) Marie she is on this forum. We ended up meeting at St richards at Chichester and ended up having our surgery the same day and in the same ward. We have really helped each other loads just through txting calling emailing as we don't live near to each other. But I truly believe that making a lovely friendship and having support has really helped and you don't feel alone. We made more friends on our ward and we all txt call each other. My point is u will have doubts be scared frightened of the unknown but there is so much more you can get out of having your surgery. Your doing something for yourself, your health your life, and you make special friendships and can help others. I wish you both luck and I'm also here to help and support you and trust me all your doubts, worrys thoughts are normal. I will be thinking of you both on the 12th I wish you luck. Take care chat to you soon and remember do what's best for yourself just this once I'm not trying to preach just help I've been there. Best of luck girls big hugs luv Kaz x x x

Thank you so much for that Kaz. It really means a lot and helps a lot too. I am feeling nice and calm at the moment and resigned to tomorrow's op. No way am I going to back out now that the waiting time is nearly over. I got my bag packed and prepared things for the family and got so many little pots with strained meals and soups in the freezer so all prepared. Everytime anyone opens the freezer they say, "Awwwww" when they see the tiny baby pots of food. Makes me laugh. I talk about children but to be honest my sons are 36 and 33 and tomorrow will be my 62nd birthday. So I am no spring chicken :D
Youngest son still lives at home and is taking time off work while I am in the hospital to keep an eye on DH as he is not in the best of health.

I will try and post a message with my ipad when I wake up from surgery to let everyone know that I am in the land of the living and will let everyone know how it all went as soon as I am feeling up to it. But for now I would really and truly like to thank each and every one of you for your unfailing kindness, support and unselfishness in the way that you share your experiences and knowledge. You have no idea how much it has meant to me to have you all supporting me :)
