Hi Guys

Have been on here a while but never really said hello !

I have a few questions hopefully somebody could help me with
I posted here back in Feb and was given lots of brill help.

So I went to docs in Feb to ask for a band. I had to do a 12 week weight management thing and see a dietitian.
I went back yesterday and doc said he would put my referral in. BMI is 45.9.
Got a call from the doc today and he said I needed to pop in tomorrow to pick up a letter with a number and password on to do the choose and book service to book my consultation at the hospital.

So what does this mean ?? Does it mean im deffo getting the band?? Doc has never done one before so he couldn't answer many of my questions.

Also whats the time scale from now, eg how long for a app and how long to be banded>>

Hey,

I never did a choose and book the appt was made for me, what is the appointment for? Who to see?

This doesn't mean you are deffo getting it yet, unfortunately the final decision comes down to the surgeon. X

Hi
Thanks for the reply.
The doctor said its to make a consultation appointment at the hospital,
What did you have to do on the first appt?

So will the surgeon make a decision then they apply for funding or what ??

Hate not knowing what going on lol

Thanks

Have you had tier 3 weight management? What stages have you done? Just seen the doctor? X

I have done a 12 week weight management program and seen a dietitian.

I really don't know loads about the process any help and info would be greatly appreciated

xx

I imagine you will need to do the tier 3 stage. This is a 12 month weight management course that is needed before they will find surgery.

It may be worth googling NICE guidelines for bariatric surgery, that will tell you what boxes you have to tick to get the funding. Tier 3 is one of those boxes.

My process was a long one. I did my tier 3 in November 2012 for 6 months (due to a high bmi) and then got my surgery 10 days ago.

There are lots of parts, seeing a psychologist, tier 3 diet etc.

Unfortunately it isn't as easy as we wish it were. It can be a lengthy one. X

Every area is different.... personally I never had to do tier 3? never saw a psychologist, didnt have a sleep apnoea test.... compared to most peoples experience I did nothing but turn up for appointments (3 in total) & have op.

Maybe check with the hospital you are under to see if they do a support group?? most that attend them are at different stages & could answer some questions.

Best of luck wit your journey :)

Each area/hospital is different.

I didn't have to do a weight management programme, nor did I have to lose weight for appointments. I simply showed up whenever I was asked to!

My details are in my signature, but my process was as follows (repeating my signature, as I know I can't see signatures on my i-phone app):

06/11/13 - GP referral
23/12/13 - First appointment was a Group session - Bloods, weight and ECG
04/02/14 - Then I met the Surgeon & Pre-Op Assessment - Bloods, weight and ECG
03/03/12 - Dietition - Just to talk through Pre-Op Diet and after op diet
12/03/14 - Psychologist - Just to make sure I was mentally prepared for weight loss and the wider impact of it - Impact to self image, impact to family and friends, group dynamics, its a huge change
13/06/14 - Given date for op
19/06/14 - Started Pre-Op Diet
04/07/14 - SLEEVE DAY

I also didn't need to select my hospital, my GP chose the closest Bariatric Team. Luckily, they operate a self-funding service (own pot of money and decide who to operate on) and the approval is at the MDT meeting, when they assign the operation date.

Once you have your first appointment, ask them their process and how they determine funding approvals.

Good Luck xx

Not only every area/hospital is different but it is different for every case!

For example me and other girl on this forum, we are under the same ccg, we were referred to the same hospital almost the same time, saw dietitian around the same time (a few days between appointments), consultant surgeon on the same day back in january.. We are similar age group, similar bmi.. similar stories to start with... she is having her op at the begining of august and i am still waiting.. not even approved for surgery yet and dont think i will be anytime soon. Had 5 appointments with the hospital already (surgeon, dietitian twice, nurse, endo specialist). So it just proves how different it is for everyone. Be prepared for long and tiring journey.. Then if you turn out to be a lucky one to have it smooth and quick.. it will be a nice surprise ;)
Good luck anyway.

hi
thanks for replys
I got my choose and book letter this morning, had 3 hospitals
The whittington hospital
Wycombe hospital
Chalford hospital

I wanted Whittington as its a specialist bariatric but the waiting list was full
I went for the Chalford Hosp, Appt on the 9th September

Bit unsure and nervous,, the lady on the phone said that the surgeon makes the final decision, So Im guessing I may know on the day ??
How does it work with the funding ?
Its not a very clear system !!!

Thankx xx
