Hiya everyone! just wondering it someone could help me plz? I went to see my Gp and asked if i could have WLS. He said he is going to refer me to a weight management program which is for 12 wks. I've read on here 6mths. I just feel confused at the moment as it didn't fully sink in in the doctors and now i have questions. How long does it usually take for WM team to get intouch with you? Do they decide if you need to be refered? How long is the wait for surgery if u r excepted? I live in Warrington. Thank you for any help and so sorry for all the questions and ive proberbly wrote it in the wrong place. xxx
Also the site wont let me look at peoples profiles does anybody know why? cheers xxx

hi and welcome think you have to have around 50 posts to be able to do that i,m from scotland so cant help you there im also new and have just been referred by my gp
im sure someone else will be along shortly and maybe be able to answer your questions

Hi, I went on a weight management programme which was also for 12 weeks.
Just jump through the hoops hun and you'll soon be on the losers bench x

The best thing to do is show that you are committed to losing the weight. If this means doing the whole weight management programme, then do it. The fact that you are are on their books now is a good sign.

Good luck xx

Hello and welcome. I have no answers re weight management but do know if you jump through all the hoops and dance to their tune you will go to the ball...

Good luck on your journey and get posting to everything, most privileges kick in after 50 posts xx

Thank you every1. Do you know how long you wait to get your appointment through from when you were refered by your doctor? xxx

Hi Joanne,

Welcome to the WLS forum!

I personally had to wait around 2 months from referral by my GP, to the date of my first appointment with my obesity consultant. This first appointment will no doubt be the first of many.

There really is no definitive time scale; it is highly variable from one PCT to the next, different consultants, different criteria, different participation required etc.

It seems you may need to attend a weight management clinic for a set time: I didn't need to. However, I had to see a dietician, an exercise specialist, have a respiratory test for sleep apnoea, bloods done and have 2 further appointments with my consultant (all within the course of around 9 months) before he then applied to my PCT for funding.

I was lucky and had my funding application approved first time, as I nicely fitted into the criteria my PCT caters to. Some on here have had funding refused (& some more than once) so have had to appeal or reapply.

I have now got my first of at least 2 appointments through from the hospital that will be performing the op; the first a group 'education' session that will cover different types of WLS, including benefits and complications. The second is with the consultant surgeon and others in his team to assess my suitability for the op.

As you can see, you need to be patient (I'm not, so it's hard!)...you will be in this for the long haul, not a quick fix! However, it will be worth it, as there are loads of fabulous people in this forum who have done brilliantly after their WLS, and who have given us the benefit of their experience by charting their progress (highs & lows), to show it really is worth it.

Hope this helps a little...good luck!

Welcome Joanne,

Hi joanne ,
weclome i am a new to this site to !
I am just starting on the road so i know how you feel. I went to my doctors last year to ask about wls and he put me on orlistat (weight loss pills),but they really upset me so i had to come off of those .The next step for me was my doctor to refer me to the weight loss panel . They took 4 months to get back to my GP to say that they wanted me to do 6 months with a dietician. I have justed finished that last month. I have been back to my GP for him to refer me back to the weight loss panel. I am just waiting now to hear back from my doctor what the next move will be.
I can only hope now i meet there criteria.

Good luck with that Marie i'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Do you know when you will find out? Glad i'm not on my own in feeling like this

Thank you Angie and thank you loubie 100.

Got told yesterday by the WM team that i only have to do the course for 8wks confused as the doctor said 12wks and people on here said 12-24 wks. Arr well someone has made a mistake somewhere. Got my first appointment through for 5th july, thanks everybody xxx
