hi im travelling to england next week for a funeral for two days im six weeks post op and worried tat it will be all chipper eating finger food etc any advice on best options if this is the case and also im planing on having a drink maybe wine what do ye peeps drink when ye go out now thanks

You don't say what stage you're at at the moment as my team put me on solids by six weeks.

i wouldnt advise any alcohol at 6 weeks post whatever stage you are :) i am 13 months post op and had 2 small glasses of wine at christmas and it really upset my tummy the bottle is still in the fridge but i don't think i will bother with it just let hubby have it :) i did have a couple of straight brandy's about 2 months ago and was fine with that but even then it was well post op and wouldn't have more than that x hope everything goes ok for the funeral and sorry for your loss xx

Well Lee you should be on soft food now I would imagine stay away from bread nibble a bit chicken, or cheese, you could take something with ya, to keep your food going in dairlea triangles are good soucre of protein and easy to carry, It is early to be drinking if you really feel the need to ahve ONE DRINK n may be only the one I would have an inch of wine in a tall glass with lemonade with ice and stir the life outta it. so thta the bubbles have gone. It is very early, really should be water. I do drink now but did manage for some time without any alcohol at all till bout 6months, just be careful can make you ill very bad tummy had that a couple of times felt like labour pains bad enough being like that in your own home but worse if you are away. Best of luck xx

For the buffet stick to the softer foods ( I still struggle with solid meat so avoid it when out). Cheese on stick if they have them, the insides of sandwiches ( not the bread yet hun) such as tuna mayo, cheese. You will probably be ok with a small amount of crunchy stuff such as a bread stick. The point is really that at 6 weeks out you can only eat tiny portions so just go for a tiny bit of easy to eat protein high stuff.
Alcohol! Alcohol always causes debate. Most surgeons say to avoid it for a period of time- in my case( and many others) it was 12 months. I didn't touch a drop for over a year and then found I didn't really like it ! However, even a small amount ( Only 1 or 2 units) often causes us RNYers to be very tipsy. Great-cheap date. BUT- becuase we absorb the alcohol quickly, we get the high quickly, it doesn't last and a lot of us get a monster hangover - before we even get home !
The other thing for me is that alcohol really is wasted calories- I still need to get my nutrition in when I can. If I'm gonna secumb to low nutrition 'empty' calories it's chocolate-not alcohol lol.
Seriously, I signed up for this for the long term and decided that I would follow the 'rules' to the very est of my ability. I do have a treat now and agin ( ref chocloate above) but find that I don't crave the bad stuff anymore. On NYE I had a small Bailleys- the only alcohol I had over the Christmas period. It was okay but I didn't have a second. I just don't need it anymore
xx

Check with your provider is probably the best bet re alcohol. Different ones say different things - mine said no alcohol for 3 months but they recommend waiting a year just because of the empty calories. I made the decision (and it's a personal one, some people do drink, some don't) I think after 4-5 months, to have the occasional glass of wine or two but I take it into account for my days calories (again some people don't count calories so that might not be relevant). As it's been said most people find it does go straight to your head as it's has a direct line to your blood stream now - you can get very drunk on very little and have a terrible hangover so I always recommend to people that you try a drink at home with a friend/family member the first time if you are going to drink. You don't want to be caught unaware of how you will react first time in public. Personally I think it might be a bit early as you are still healing inside but again your team will be the best people to check with. As for the food, any soft or mush, like maybe dips or cheese could be ok if you really chew well. I know you probably don't want to have to take your own food but if you can manage it, it might be the safest option. If they have something like bread sticks you can dip in houmous that would be good as you can chew the bread sticks to mush before you swallow. Best of luck, I know funerals are hard enough without worrying about this sort of thing too x
