Im Numb

Hi Dee,

Yes it's normal. I had abdo surgery 13 years ago and my scar and the surrounding skin is still numb. My bypass scar is particularly numb and feels really weird when underneath the skin gets itchy, but i can't scratch it because the skin is numb and i don't feel the scratching, so the itch is never relieved. It's because when the surgeon made the cut, even keyhole cuts, they cut through nerve endings, and the very tiny ones don't rejoin, and so you can have scars that never regain feeling. As was the case with my scar from 13 years ago.

No not necessarily. It may just take a while for those little nerve endings to heal and particularly so just under the surface of the skin.
How big is your scar?

its all part of the healing process and takes time most people get sensation back after key hole surgery, when i had my tum tuck i lost sensation and it didnt come back but thats as the scar is a big one, i think it will settle in a few weeks as the skin is just knitting back together

im sure it will be fine dee, let me know how it gets on.

The numbness will improve but it may never go away.

My scars feel a little numb but I am thinking of one on my thumb, its been numb for 3 years now.

Its a trade off, they cut through nerves, which may or may not recover.

But, at least we will be slimmer.

most key hole surgery gets sensation back any thing over 3-4 inch scars is where long term numbness comes in

Hi Dion,

Yep I've got it too baby!

Around my scars where the plasters were and stuff!

I asked my dad if it happened to him when he had his hip replacement, it did!

I'm not worrying about it, if it comes back it does, if it doesnt, it doesnt! Nothing we can do now, we did want these doctors to chop us up in the first place!!!!

its rare 4 keyhole surgery to loose sensation long term girls just give it time as the nerve endings have to rejoin and get to know each other again.

I'm glad you posted this. It hasn't really bothered me but I do occasionally comment to hubby about my "numb patch". Thought it was soething to do with cutting a wee nerve or something. But like I say, doesn't bother me too much - at least I know it may last a while, if not permanently. Hey ho!

Worry not Dee, I was really numb after the op for a good few weeks, mostly below my port scar. Having just checked by pinching myself (DUH!!) I have most definately regained some sensation and it all feels back to normal!!

i have a few that dont have feelingore and a patch just above my c-section scar that is numb still as well i can stick pins in it and not feel it makes a great party trick hehehe
