I've had dodgy knees for as long as I can remember ... but then in 2004 I started running with a running club I was around 20St then ... and the knees just got worse.

Fast forward to today I'm trying to exercise, I do spin, body combat and weights, but my knees have really started to play me up lately.

I can't squat, as I get to a certain point and my knees (mainly my left) gives way accompanied by a sharp pain. I'm knock-kneed :( so that probably doesn't help

I just wondered if it really DOES get better once the weight is off?

Also - I'm a great swimmer, but don't like to swim too much as the chemicals are too aggressive on my hair. So wondered it there was anything else I could do besides swimming that could keep my fit (and abate my current weight gain  :(), but ease my knees - I'm not doing spin, cross trainer, bike, wave machine etc. as I really need rest and get my knees back to health.

I really wanted to do Race For Life this year, but that's looking unlikely now .

Tah in advance.:) :) :) :) :) :)

CC with regard to swimming and your hair, is it because you are having difficulty finding a cap that will fit? If so I found this company in Manchester that specialises in caps for people with long hair or hair that is braided or locks. I bought one but am yet to try it in a pool:rolleyes:. It fits great though. If you want the details PM me and I will dig out the details. I hope to brave a pool soon as I love swimming.

Hi TB,

I have a big head ...... no doubt about that. It's abnormally big. :) I don't wear my hair in braids or locks etc. However I do have lots of hair. I have a nice Speedo cap that fits nicely (last time I wore it!). I don't normally wear a swimming cap because I find they are useless, my hair gets wet any how even if it's just a small section ... which is still not good IMHO :) Also my style of swimming - front and back crawl and turning in the water after each length means my hair gets wet anyhow. :)

How are you getting on with your band? :)

Hi CC. Things are fine with the band. I do not know exactly how much I have lost because Walsall messed up my records and are still trying to sort it out. I suppose I could hop on mine and see but I think that will just mess with my head.

However, I feel so much better, my clothes are fitting well. I have been taken off some of my BP meds and that is the biggest thing for me as the combination was destroying my kidney function. I can walk without a stick.

I know it is going to take a long time to get to a healthy BMI but I am trying not to think about it and try and adapt to eating more healthy foods and exercising when I can - which isn't very much at the moment.

I have had two fills so far and can certainly feel restriction. I am due to be seen at the hospital again in about 5 weeks and see what they say about another fill. So far I have 4ml in a 14 cc band so they could still pump in a bit more:D.

So far so good!

hey CC.

Would some gentle walking be possible? Otherwise swimming sounds like your best bet (except for the hair thing!) or perhaps aqua aerobics? Or how about the power plates?

Hi CC,

I have exactly the same problem , i have bright red hair , love to swim , but i had to stop for two reasons ... the first being the pressure on my back as i left the water impacted heavily on my spine and greatly increasing my pain , i spoke to my doc and he said the weightlessness that you feel in the water gives you a false sense of security, and people tend to leave the pool energetically which could put sudden strain on vunerable joints , he said , try swimming in the sea ... as when you leave its very gradual and not so much of a shock on your joints , i tried it , he was right ... but i have a back problem , i dont know anything about knees , but maybe when it gets warmer you could try a dip in the sea (thats if you are blessed with a nearby clean beach).... oh and the second reason .... i come out the pool looking like worzel gummage !! the chemicals just hate my hair , swimming hats were rubbish , but i did find a great shampoo, especially for post swimming ... i forget the name , but it will come to me , i'll let you know.

I hope your knees give you a break .

Take care xx

It's one of the reasons I took up cycling. It's hard on the joints for lighter people to jog so heavier people it's really bad. Carrying my weight for so long I have damaged my right knee. It's a lot more swollen than my left, but it hardly hurts now. Only when I do spin classes sometimes do i get aggro from it. I dare say it may need work in the future, but for now, it's fine and no amount of cycling I do hurts it.

So you're suggesting cycling? :)

I can't ride ...! Funny because I was saying to my sister yesterday that if I could ride a bicycle (confidently) I would cycle everywhere and go for long rides. I love the idea.

Spin really had hurt my knees.

Spinning really hurts my knees too sometimes if I push too hard :)

Cross trainer is another I love too. That's very little impact too and can burn 2000kcals in an hour if I push hard

Thanx Mixxy. It's good to know it hurts you too ... not because I'm an evil b*tch but because I know it's not just me, esepcially me at my weight. I really do work as hard as I can during spin so do push myself quite hard.

I like the X trainer, but wondered if that would be bad for me knees? Evidently not given you were big and still did well with it. I'll give it a concerted go.

Cheers dears xxxxxxxxxxxxxx :lilkiss: :banana dancer:

Well CC - looks like it could be - `Get on yer bike` in a very gentle to start with way of course!

I have problems with my joints, but have just joined a gym, but am waiting for my induction this coming week!

I know I need to do the excercise - but will do anything gently to start with and listen to my body....and hopefully increase my programme once I have more confidence and more weight comes off.

Hey Kitty

Alas - I can't ride a bicycle. :(

Good luck with the gym, you'll really enjoy it :)

Its funny my knees are goosed, I mean there is no cartilage left between the bones, running more than 3 miles kills me, and I found the elliptical really aggravated my knees, yet spin doesn't hurt them at all.

Cycling is good because it frees up your knee joints and causes fluid to build up so it lessens the affect of the wear and tear on them.

Stationary cycling is really good if you can't get on the road, just keep the tension low and you'll be fine. Sometimes mine are so bad I can hardly walk to the gym, yet after 45 mins on the bike they are ok.

aqua aerobics sounds good too, but palates and yoga might help too.
