Is it time for emergency bariatric surgery services?

TUT you i thought you were poorly then...............thankfully your not :) interesting read though. x

Excellent idea if it actually gets implemented.

I remember when I developed gastritis (inflammation) a few weeks post op, on contacting my bariatric team I was initially informed "Go to your GP or A&E, we don't deal with emergencies" ...... although they did relent and agree to see me a few days later (at the time I did not know whether it was gastritis, or a leak or what it was).

Having read so many times on here when people develop complications post op, they come on here and ask "What is it?" if there were some dedicated Bariatric A&E teams it would help enormously.

Especially it often seems that the average GP has little knowledge of the indepth complexities of bariatric surgery and complications that can arise ..... and an ordinary A&E department might be *slightly* better, but as soon as they have diagnosed that the problem is bariatric they will shunt you off to a Bariatric Hospital anyway ...... resulting in loss of time.

Interesting....my local hospital have very little knowledge of my 'new insides'
This came to light when I had to go for a scan, whilst the doctor was looking on the tv monitor he asked me ' what's this then ' so I had to give him a little lesson on a gastric bypass.
In which he replied 'does it get put back' ???
I know if an emergency arrived concerning my bypass I'd be very worried.

Interesting article, but it's the commissioners they have to convince. If they don't think it's viable, they won't commission the funds. Sad thing is most commissioners look at funding services from a business aspect and it's all about 'targets' etc, rather than patient safety and care.
