Is this right for me?

Hello all,

As you can probably deduce from the title I am in the early stages of considering surgery. I am what you call a very big girl, to put it politely, at my highest I was 31 stone at the age of 28. I was persuaded to join Slimming World and have lost 5 stone in a year which I am amazed and really chuffed with and I thoroughly enjoy going. I had a consultation with a bariatric specialist in May but was told my BMI is too high and he would prefer to have it below 50 in order to safely operate. Understandable, but a disappointment to be fair, the nutritionist has given me a plan to follow in order to achieve the required BMI. The plan is really really hard, 800-1000 calories a day and is something I have to stick at for the next 4 or 5 months. Is this fate's way of saying, 'Surgery isn't right for you'? Should I stick with Slimming World? At this rate, it would take years to get to target, which is depressing enough as it is, but I find the idea of surgery quite scary, not to mention a huge investment. I have really good weeks at SW and then weeks of stagnation. I don't really have anyone to talk to about this, I live alone and my friends (from SW) are biased. I'm really at a crossroads and unsure which path to choose. Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

Hi Suzirida and welcome. It is a very difficult decision to make. You have to research and find out what is best for you. You have to look at how it would change your life. Look at the advantages and disadvantages. We are here if you have any questions. Good luck

Morning and well done on your fantastic loss so far!! The question to ask is long term can you keep that weight off or will you bounce back up again over time. I would say SW really suits your style of weight loss and works for you.surgery is a tool, it works if you work with it but it can be cheated so there is no guarantee. Many people on here have stalled or put back on for various reasons.
I believe in fate so if it's meant to be it will be.
If surgery is what you think you need keep working towards it. It's a personal choice and comes with its own challenges but my advice is read sophiapinks diary..she started at your top weight and had a sleeve...she has lost half her weight in about 2 years and looks amazing.
Just think long term and what you think is best for you.
Good luck x

Hi my start weight was 32 stone and I've worked my way down towards 24st 1lb. 5 stone was through dieting and the liver shrinkage diet and the other 3 has been since my actual surgery. It really is personal choice. I have days where I regret it but for me this is a permanent thing. I lost 14 stone before on a shake diet and put it all back on again so for me that didn't work. It honestly is personal preference. Think my bmi was 57 or so when I had surgery. Have you tried other surgeons to look into? They may not all have that bmi barrier to go forward with. X

Hello,
It's the Waiting that's the killer isn't it! I know I'm incredibly lucky to have gotten my wls when I did as it seems all the goal posts have moved and keep on moving and in the meantime those wanting to improve their health/ life's just have to go with the flow, they may not always realise that when YOU have made the decision to change your life you just want to get on with it
All you can do is keep on doing what your doing and hope that your PCT sorts itself out
I wish you every luck
