Here's a post I made on this subject on another WLS forum:
Here's some advice regarding taking a laptop into hopsital:
- Use a sturdy non-computer-manufacturer-branded bag, i.e. a pilot or overnight case so you're not scraming "steal me" to everyone around you.
- Be nice to the ward sister and ask her if she minds you using your laptop as she gets the final say. Some may object to you using the hospital's power sockets or may ask you to use only a specific bank of sockets.
- In regards to connectivity, I believe some hospitals are now offering wireless access for patients so ask for details. If you want to use a 3G dongle then ask the ward sister.
- Get a Kensington security lock and be sure to use it if the laptop isn't in your direct sight, even if it's just to go to the 'loo. Decent laptop bags will have security zips where you can pass a Kensington lock through it and then secure it against another object such as your hospital bed.
I had absolutely no problem charging my laptop or using my 3G dongle even when I was in the Acute Medical Unit / High Dependancy Unit at Southend Hospital. In fact, several of the staff members saw me watching DVDs and we had a great natter regarding favourite movies, etc.
Regards, Ade.
