but will I be able to use my laptop whilst in St Richards? And if so will I need to take my dongle with me??

xx

Yes, you can take your laptop but be aware that there is nowhere secure to store it whilst you are in theatre. And as for the dongle, I believe sex toys are not allowed!

Haha!! How hilarious! my kids now want to know what I'm laughing at ;-)

So is there internet access there then?

xx

Sorry Emma, you have now taken me way out of my comfort zone. I only know that people use their laptops whilst in the Bariatric Bay, I don't know how they get the connection. I is quite new to all this technology stuff.

Lol, ok no worries I shall wait for some ultra knowledgeable person to come along and let me know - I have searched the internet to try and find out but maybe I'm looking in the wrong places! lol xx

Here's a post I made on this subject on another WLS forum:

Here's some advice regarding taking a laptop into hopsital:

- Use a sturdy non-computer-manufacturer-branded bag, i.e. a pilot or overnight case so you're not scraming "steal me" to everyone around you.

- Be nice to the ward sister and ask her if she minds you using your laptop as she gets the final say. Some may object to you using the hospital's power sockets or may ask you to use only a specific bank of sockets.

- In regards to connectivity, I believe some hospitals are now offering wireless access for patients so ask for details. If you want to use a 3G dongle then ask the ward sister.

- Get a Kensington security lock and be sure to use it if the laptop isn't in your direct sight, even if it's just to go to the 'loo. Decent laptop bags will have security zips where you can pass a Kensington lock through it and then secure it against another object such as your hospital bed.

I had absolutely no problem charging my laptop or using my 3G dongle even when I was in the Acute Medical Unit / High Dependancy Unit at Southend Hospital. In fact, several of the staff members saw me watching DVDs and we had a great natter regarding favourite movies, etc.

Regards, Ade.

Thanks Ade, I'm really hoping to get on the laptop whilst in hospital so fingers crossed that St Richards are one of those who offer it xx

The hospital I was in didn't have Wi-Fi so I used my own O2 dongle. The staff didn't have any objection to me either using it or plugging my charger into a spare electric socket.

I know not all hospitals operate the same way though and my local one doesn't allow any personal electrical items until they've been inspected by one of their electricians. I'd give them a call and ask, or have a look at their website under the inpatient section.

I'm probably stating the obvious here but remember to take in some headphones if you plan to watch TV or films so as not to disturb other patients.

Ok, whilst at St Richards today I asked about the internet access and was told they dont provide wifi - but I can take my laptop and a broadband dongle with me.

Thanks for the replies people xxx

Happy dongling.:)

My OH always tells me: 'There is no such thing as a stupid question....although there is plenty of opportunity for a stupid answer'. Soz, can't help with the WIFI question but felt compelled to impart some of his knowledge!!!! xxx
