My First Fill

I had my first fill this afternoon with Mr Slater. I had 2ml in. It was very odd sitting up with a needle sticking out of my stomach whilst sipping water!

I'm just about to have my first cup of tea, if the sips of water were anything to go by, gurgling could be the new sound effect at coffee time from now on.

So onwards and downwards from now on.

I had my first fill today too.. I was terrified but not as bad as I had imagined. Ive heard a few funny noises too.
They didn't make me drink whilst the needle was hanging out. Thank goodness I would have been out cold if they had. Hope your doing ok

I hope you feel well and it settles down for you :)

Glad it went well, it must be weird!

Lots of banders getting first fills this week. There seems to be quite a few of us who've been banded in the last couple of months.

glad they are all going well...my first is just a memory lol my 9th was last week and is the first to have made any difference :)

In that case TopKat, you should join us as we learn about restriction! Your story does worry me a little, what if I never find restriction, what would I do? I'm not sure I have your tenacity and willpower.

I jumped on the scales this morning and I'd lost 3.5lbs from the last time I weighed myself, that was a nice surprise because I'd convinced myself I had no restriction and had stopped losing. If we could sort our heads out, remove all these barriers and negative thoughts, I'm certain life would be very different.

Please don't be worried by my story, or the fact that it has taken me so long to get restriction. In the first 6-8 months, I was happy not having any, I was happily losing 2, 3-4lbs a week through the choices I was making. I chose personally not to rush my fills. As it was, it has then taken us longer to find restriction since I decided I needed that "help", I've still continued to lose, but we were surprised it just took as much as it did.

The diaphragmatic fill proved to me that there is a very fine line with restriction as literally when she put 1.5mls in there to take me up to 12.5mls, nothing would pass through. She took 0.5ml out and the water flowed through and I could physically feel it. I'm now sat at 12mls so know that if I am to have another fill it will only be able to be a very tiny amount.

It is hard to get our heads around the fact that 0.25 or 0.5mls can make such a difference especially when we feel no restriction. I was talking to my provider regarding the fact that I was at 11mls at the time and have a 14ml band and I was concerned that I'd get to 14 and not feel it. She said out of there 2550 current patients only 2 of those were up to their 14mls but had restriction, there were a few in the 13mls but who were maintaining. And all of the others had found it.

At first they told me restriction with a 14ml band, tends to kick in between 7-10 mls, but the nurse I saw last time said it is more like 7-11, and over 10mls is when they tend to take it steady as it can kick in at any time if it hasn't done before and at those points even the tiniest bit of saline can make a difference of no restriction to being too tight.

The hardest part of not having had restriction was the hunger. Feeling it after eating, between meals, on waking, on sleeping, it was hard, it has been hard. And this is the thing I am finding hardest to adjust to now, the fact that I don't feel hungry. It is BLISS to be able to go 4-5 hours without feeling hungry, without looking for food but then having to make choices about what I eat because I'm close to my 1100 cals. At the moment, I am ok to look for whatever I choose to eat, because a small amount is starting to satisfy the hunger when I do have any and as such, it makes the choice of food and eating a little easier too :)

Top Kat that's really interesting info . I have just had a tiny fill of .25 taking me to 7ml out of 10ml and the hunger I was starting to feel is now gone again... It's heavenly!

It's a bit hit and miss for me learning about restriction. It was my my first fill and my provider doesn't put anything in during the op. I took it very carefully with liquids and mushies. I'm learning about portion sizes, eating more slowly and watching calories. I've felt the pain of rushing, eating too much and eating the wrong things! I was very conscious that I could feel my band in the first couple of days, but that has gone away now.

I have my next fill booked for 8th Nov with Guy Slater, after that fill I'll see the specialist nurses for my fills.

I am losing, so all is good. I'm on a steep learning curve at the moment and looking forward to the future.

I have literally just been given my fill date too..11 th Nov..cannot wait..mainly I want to know is it bearable..I detest needles :(
