hi all needles really worry me the op i can deal with its the canular they put in your hand that scares me most.

sorry for being a baby guys but i am petrified.:sign0007:

After having four of these administered over the last few years, I can honestly say that the actual needle does not hurt. What does hurt is when hospital staff accidently 'knock' them causing extreme discomfort! Make sure that they are strapped securely and remain so. They will work loose, when they do, request asap that a nurse replaces the plasters to secure it. Failing this, you will end up with your hands badly bruised and sore/aching!

The cannula doesn't hurt too bad. I met another bypass patient in the hospital who was terrified of needles and they gave her a medication to relax her and make her feel a bit drunk before they did the cannula and she was okay with it.

Hello. Don't worry too much about the needles. It's just something that you'll get used to. If they hit the vein correctly it doesn't actually hurt at all. Unfortunately for me my veins were deep, they missed rather a lot and the cannulas kept getting sore so they would need to insert new ones regulary. I ended up having 51 needles inserted by the end of my stay and my veins collapsed but even with all that the actual needles didn't really hurt...it was the bruises and swelling after.

Ask for emla cream before if you are really worried, its a local anesthetic cream or a mild sedative.Needles dont bother me but we are all different!

Thanks everyone for trying to make me feel better about needles but im just a big baby when it comes to sharp needles being inserted into my veins i will defo be asking for the cream and anything else i can get to help me rrelax. listen to me i make more fuss than some ladies in labour.:wave_cry:

Anaesthetists and doctors have a wonderful knack of distracting your attention from anything that may cause upset or discomfort. They will talk to you and having to anwer them really does take your mind off any procedures.
