Negative doctor - feel quite down now!

Went to docs today as I needed my thyroid results (it's swinging between under and over but she thinks it will settle as underactive) and she was very negative about getting the band.

She basically said I'd get it done and lose a bit of weight then go back into bad habits. I DO have issues with my relationship with food but I can't see it getting any better without learning how to eat properly from scratch and ridding myself of bad habits. I've had years of diets so her saying 'have one little piece of chocolate once every few days' isn't exactly a viable or realistic option!

Just feel a bit down now - I have my consultation on Thursday so hoping the surgeon can help stop my doubts.

Has anyone else had the same reaction / thyroid issues or put a lot of weight back on after the band?

Thanks guys x

My doctor laughed at me when I raised the question of the band and weight loss surgery in general. They wouldn't refer me.

I went private and they still aren't aware.

I didn't speak to my GP about my issues, because they were my issues and I had to get into my own right head space to make this work for me. The band does not guarantee success. It does help reduce the volume of (healthy band friendly) food eaten, however the majority of the rest is up to the owner of the band. Foods like cake, biscuits, icecream, chocolate etc just slide through, so unless someone can and will change their eating habits the band is not likely to work. Can your GP refer you on for help with dealing with your relationship with food? Even if you were to then have wls following your private consultation, that expert guidance could help too, because its unlikely going privately will deal with the 'relationship' issues.

Good luck with your GP and your consultation...don't forget to update us :)

Have a look into Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) this is something that can really help deal with the relationship with food. My own relationship with food has always been bad, the habits, the eating and for me, having my band has helped me address them on my own and to make positive healthy choices. A lot of it for me, has come from having private surgery, because for me it is such a huge outlay financially that it HAS to work. But by going down this route, I have to make those choices. It isn't easy at times.

But worth looking into CBT :)

I agree with Top-Kat CBT is worth investigating. My GP was nothing short of dismissive about my obesity and food addiction when I went to talk about WLS on at least 4 occasions. I had previously lost 6 stone through Weight Management so he told me I just needed more willpower again, and he could arrange for me to be weighed each week :/
I funded my own surgery as a result and then went to speak to him about CBT as the head issues don't get fixed with surgery- thinking about his response makes me angry - so after talking to the PCT and fact-finding, I waited until the other GP was back off maternity leave before trying asking for a referral again from her. Total understanding, discussion of my issues and concerns - a complete contrast from her colleague! Success! I have now had two initial counselling consultations and been referred for CBT as a result. Many PCT's will have some form of 'talking therapies' initiative so it's worth finding out. Good luck x

Thanks everyone.

I think it's hard to imagine anyone who has struggled with their weight that won't have some sort of issue with their relationship with food! But I don't think it necessarily means that you can never lose weight with wls?

I really want to change my eating habits and like many hope that this will kick-start that process. I think I'd need to see the results of changing habits and physically not be able to make bad choices to get me out of doing it.

Top-Kat - you're right, it's so much money to throw away and not make work.

I'll let you know what my consultant says, hopefully he will resolve some of my doubts!

When I saw my GP to ask for advice re WLS he wrote the names of some diet books on a post-it, told me to read them and then go back to tell him what I thought I could do to lose weight. I went private! It's early days for me but I've found that even the presence of the band has changed the way I think about food. My appetite is decreased which helps, but even when I feel hungry or 'head hungry' I'm able to say no because I don't want to jeopardise my health or waste this opportunity. It's working out for me so far, fingers crossed it keeps going!
