Hi,
I'm new to this website so be gentle!!! I am currently looking into getting a gastric band but not sure how long it takes etc. I live in Brent PCT and it doesn't have the guidelines on the BOSPA website.............does anyone know how to get this info? I went to see my GP tonight who is going to refer me to whoever he needs to about a gastric band. He also gave me Orlistat to try. My BMI is currently 40.7. If I lose a bit of weight and go under 40 will I affect my chances of getting the op??

Does anyone else live in the Brent PCT and if so, how long did everything take?? I am obviously keen to get everything moving!!! Also, what are the typical steps to getting a band.....i.e. GP appointment then......, or does it vary depending on the PCT/doctor/surgeon??

Thanks in advance!!!

The BMI depends on which PCT you are in. Some say 40+ no comorbidities, others say 36+ including comorbidities, Some PCTs expect a BMI of 50. So the long and short of it is - you'll need to check with your PCT! Sorry not much help really. x x

The doctor thought it was 40 which is ok. The are I live in is a bit strange as the surgery is on the high road. One side of the high road counts as Brent PCT and one side comes under Camden PCT. Camden PCT are great and will help with costs of gym etc. Brent won't do diddly as far as I can see!!! I just don't want to get my hopes up only to have them dashed as I live on the wrong side of the road!! Hahahaha!!

I obviously understand I may not get the surgery or it may take months and months. In the meantime I'll just get saving I guess!!!!

cant help as Im a Private Bander but wanted to say Hi and Welcome to minis xx

:welcome: Hi meggiemoo - this is a lovely forum, you've come to the right place. You're right, all PCTs differ so, hopefully, someone will be along soon who can help. If you go under 40 BMI you will effect your chances - unless you have comorbidities such as diabetes, asthma or acid reflux (there are more but I can't remember them) when a BMI of 35 is acceptable. Some PCTs are higher than that but your doctor should be able to tell you.
Sometimes your GP has to apply for funding, sometimes it's the hospital.

Good luck meggiemoo, Zxx

Hang on in there. Meanwhile, this site is very helpful and supportive. People come and go, some post more than others. Take care. x x x

i second what zetta says if your bmi goes under 40 and you have no co morbilities they can say no under the NICE guidelines x

Thank you for your kind words. I don't actually want to tell people about this as I'm kind of ashamed. I didn't realise it that much until tonight when I mentioned it to my sister, she said I was being ridiculous, then I made a joke about not being able to run for the bus and started crying. Not really sure where that came from!!!!

Those people who have funded it privately, roughly how much has it cost and how long did you have to wait??

Thanks again!

Haha I've just reread that and that really does soung amazingly pathetic! I'm not that weepy really. I think I have just got to the end of my tether. I feel the size of a house and am just sick of it. I promise to be cheerier than this in future posts. I am actually quite a strong person!!!

Welcome to Minimins meggiemoo d :D:D:D

If you don't feel like being cheery, then moan or rant. This is a place for you to do that and not feel like you have to be upbeat all the time:). Bet you're tired of doing that?..xx

Hello,
I just want to welcome you to this lovely site.
I am looking into having a Bypass so different to you there.
I have just had my first appointment at the hospital to see the Nurse specialist and been told it can take a yr from GP Referal to having your op. Im sure someone will be along who has been through gastric banding .
I have a simular BMI as yourself and I am currently taking Olistat too although I am not finding it helping much :( I hope it helps you.
I would be intrested in the answer to the question you ask regarding losing weight and doing op?
Regards x

I went with the Weight Loss Surgery Group in a lovely private hospital in Highgate - North London back at the start of April it was £6995 all inclusive with a fully inclusive 2 year aftercare including unlimited fills-defills. From my first meeting with them to my op was about a month, but I had done a years research on surgeons and providers before hand so knew who and what I wanted.

Its important to look at the aftercare package you will get if you go private as many places only offer 1 or 2 fills after surgery (or even none) and then you can pay around £90 per fill and you may need a quite a few over the first 2 years....WLSG also give you a 24hr emergency contact number, quite a few ladies on here have used them and I cant recommend them strongly enough. let me know if there is any more info you need and i will try and help

Hi Meggiemoo, just wanted to say welcome to Mini's. Don't feel funny about getting upset - we've all been there lovely. x

Hi Meggiemoo and :welcome2:to mini's. I'm a bander of just over 3 weeks and had mine done on the NHS. All PCT's differ so you'll have to check yours. Normally you can find out on the bospa site but being as that failed for you I'm sure someone like Shelbell will be able to help you find out when she's on the forum. I'm not right clever with the computer so I'd just confuse you even more:confused: lol. Good luck on your wls journey.

Thank you everyone! It is so nice to find such a supportive group!!!!

AAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHH. Sorry to start on a rant but I have to get this off my chest before starting work or I might explode. I'm sure you have all experienced this aswell at some point but people's attitudes to the surgery............GRRRRRRRRRR!!!! Just got off the phone with (or hung up should I say!!) my sister who told me to stop being so ridiculous and lazy and to just get on with it. I had mentioned the Orlistat to her and said that many people seemed to have a great first two weeks but not much after that. Her point was that at least it's a start. That would be true if I had 1-2 stone to lose but it's more like 8!!! If I had the ability to lose the weight independently I wouldn't be 28 and the size of a house!!!

Right, anger gone!! Blissful feeling returning...........aaaaaaaaah!!

Hope you are all well!!!

Hi Meggiemoo

Can your GP refer you to Camden PCT? I think we have all either come across directly or indirectly negative attitudes towards WLS, people dont seem to realise that its not as easy as some one telling you to not be so lazy and just get on with it!

Good luck with whichever route you go down to get your surgery x
