Open surgery?

Just curious why some people have had open rather then keyhole gastric bypass? I thought they did them all keyhole now. Just wondering in case I am ever able to have mine...

Think it depends on the surgeon and what they are experienced in doing. Also another impactor is your liver. I was told that if my liver hadnt shrunk enough on the pre-op diet then there was a chance I may have to have open surgery or a gastric sleeve

oh ur welcome - this site is def gr8 for advice/ support - I know that I couldnt have gotten this far without everyone on here. Good luck with your journey

I understand your bmi is also a factor. The larger you are the more likely an open procedure is required. Good luck on your journey!

In my case it was purely financial. My PCT would only fund open surgery as it's much cheaper than laprascopic.

it also depends on previous scar tissue if you've had other surgery's before. I was warned on the day they might have had to do open surgery as i have loads of scar tissue however i ended up with keyhole.

Thank everyone! I want this so badly, to be honest I don't care which they do. I just want it! Lol. You all have been so welcoming! So happy I found this place xxxxxxxx

That is interesting about open being cheaper than keyhole. Thanks for that, an interesting fact.

Hi, It depends on your bmi if you are at the larger side of the scale or into the super obese category they may do open surgery although I know most surgeons do keyhole!

MY BMI is 49. But, in looking around it seems to be surgeons preference. I was watching that documentary on that man who was 80 odd stone and he was done keyhole. But, his surgeon seemed younger and pretty progressive.

My BMI was mid 50's, and mine was done keyhole.
xXx

I'm like misstickle and lamornamiss, we had the same hospital all with open surgery.

My funding was guaranteed with my pct however they won't fund keyhole...

My BMI was 49. I had open surgery due to extensive adhesions. An attempt was made to do it laparoscopically but they converted when they saw the adhesions!
